Professional Activities


Professor Xiaofang Zhou has been on the program committees of numerous international conferences, often as a Senior PC member, including SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, EDBT, WWW, ACM Multimedia, CIKM, ICDM, PAKDD, ICDCS, IJCAI, AAAI and SIGKDD.  He was the Convenor and Director of the ARC Research Network in Enterprise Information Infrastructure (2004-2011, a major national research collaboration initiative in Australia), Research Director of the ARC Training Centre for Information Resilience (2020), and a Chief Investigator for the ARC Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics (2003 - 2010) and Center for Energy Data Innovation (2018 - 2023). Currently, he is an Associate Editor of The World Wide Web Journal and Springer's Encyclopedia of Database Systems. He was the Chair of IEEE Technical Committee on Data Engineering (2015 - 2018) and a member of IEEE Fellow Evaluation Committee (2018, 2021, 2022). He was the founding chair of ACM SIGSPATIAL Australian Chapter (2010-2011). He has been on the Steering Committees of ICDE, DASFAA (Vice Chair 2019-2021), WISE, APWeb (Chair, 2010 - 2018), Australasian Database Conferences (Chair, 2020-2021) and BigComp conferences, and a member of the PVLDB Advisory Board (2019-2021). In the past, he was an Associate Editor of The VLDB Journal (2008-2015), IEEE Data Engineering Bulletin, Information Processing Letters, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (2009 - 2015), IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing (2013-2019), Distributed and Parallel Databases (2015-2020), Knowledge and Information Systems (2017-2021)

From 2006 to 2020, he was a Professor of Computer Science at The University of Queensland, leading the Data and Knowledge Engineering (DKE) research group and Data Science Discipline at UQ. Under his leadership, UQ DKE/Data Science discipline received 5 out of 5 ranking in the Australian Research Council's research quality assessment for three consecutive rounds (ERA 2012, 2015, 2018). Before joining UQ in 1999, he worked as a Senior Research Scientist in the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and was the leader of its Spatial Information Systems group. He was a Lecturer in Computer Science at Nanjing University (1987 - 1991) and held visiting positions at The National University of Singapore (2002 and 2018) and Nanyang Technological University (2006).  Xiaofang received his BSc and MSc degrees in Computer Science from Nanjing University in 1984 and 1987 respectively, and PhD in Computer Science from UQ in 1994.
