About the Quantum Science and Technology Laboratory

Welcome to the home page of the Quantum Science and Technology Laboratory at the University of British Columbia, led by Dr. Joseph Salfi. We develop and employ advances in controllable solid-state quantum systems that can be used to answer fundamental questions about how nature behaves, and which have the potential to revolutionize what can be computed using a paradigm called quantum computation.

In order to accomplish this, we build nano-scale devices and measure them with high precision in extreme cryogenic environments. The devices we build and measure leverage the ability to isolate, manipulate, and measure individual electrons and their spins in nanoscale devices that resemble standard transistors, and the ability to engineer superconducting microwave circuits with non-linear elements.

We part of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Quantum Matter Institute (QMI), and the Advanced Materials Process Engineering Laboratory (AMPEL) at the University of British Columbia.
