The Tern was founded in 2025 by Finlay Glen and Gabriel Pearcey, gigging around London with a distinctive roots-inspired sound that blends folk, rock and country. Their first single, 'Gentle James', came out in 2025 and their second single, 'Winter Song' in March 2026. In 2026 they expanded into a full band, with Tien Albert on bass and Max Guest on drums. They are releasing their debut EP on 14th August.

The Tern was founded in 2025 by cousins Finlay Glen and Gabriel Pearcey. They've built their reputation gigging across London with a distinctive roots-inspired sound that blends folk, rock and country. Their debut single, the country-influenced Gentle James, was released in 2025, followed by the acoustic folk track Winter Song in March 2026. At the beginning of 2026 they expanded into a full band with Tien Albert on bass and Max Guest on drums. Their debut EP will be released on 14th August.
The EP captures The Tern's full-band sound for the first time. Produced by Ella Walker (who releases music as Wildes), the band have swapped the acoustic restraint of their earlier recordings for layered electric guitars and a bigger sound. What remains though is songwriter and lead vocalist Finlay Glen's observational lyricism: both The Hills Are Blue and Take What You Can Get concern in different ways the banality of contemporary life, managing to find moments of humour and transcendence; Hard Luck is written as a winding and philosophical resignation to life’s imperfections; and Gentle James, the final track, is a quiet and unadorned portrait of grief. All have light and shade in them both.
The record was completed just in time for the birth of Glen's first child; he was sending notes on the final mixes from the antenatal ward at King's the day before his son was born. In their EP announcement he said, “there’ll now be another thing I’ve had a hand in making arriving into the world. I love my boy more, but this runs him quite close.”
