Foundations of Algebra & Geometry

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Our math class will be a further review of the foundations of algebra and geometry. We will focus on critical thinking, number sense, and the core concepts of algebra and geometry.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

· A separate notebook for class notes and assignments

· A separate folder or binder with 3 hole punch capability

· Pencil and colored pencil/pen

PROCEDURES & EXPECTATIONS

· Come into class quietly each day, and immediately begin work on the daily review posted on the whiteboard in the back of the room.

· When I am teaching a lesson or we are working as a group, please give me your undivided attention.

· You may sharpen pencils or get permission to leave the room during individual work time only. NOT during a lesson or the first 15 minutes.

· Please work until the bell rings, and wait for me to dismiss you.

· Be on time - be in your seat when the bell rings and working on the daily warm-up problem(s). Students will be marked “tardy” if they are not quietly working on the warmup when the bell rings. Make sure to always enter the classroom quietly as to not disturb students who are already working on the warmup. Consequences for tardies per the 2019-2020 PHS Student Handbook

· Be prepared – have all materials ready by the start of the class, including your notebook, sharpened pencil, homework that is due, and any handouts/supplies needed.

· Be respectful - I expect that you will treat me, each other, and the classroom and equipment with respect. If you act in a disrespectful manner, you and I and your parents/guardians will meet to determine a way to prevent this behavior from reoccurring.

· Be thoughtful

· Be focused

CELL PHONES

To the left of the door, there is a calculator caddy. Students will immediately place their cell phones in the caddy or choose to keep his or her cell phone in their backpack, locker, etc. Parma High School prohibits the use of cell phones, iPod’s, personal computing devices, video games, etc., in the classroom during school hours. Unless explicitly authorized by me they are NOT to be used in my classroom. Misuse of an electronic device will be reported to administration. The following consequences may occur:

First offense: Device will be taken away until the end of the class period.

Second offense: Device will be taken away. The student’s name will be recorded and the device may be picked up after school by the student.

Third offense: Device will be taken away. The student’s name will be recorded and the parent is required to pick it up, or authorize its return to the student.

Fourth offense: Cell phone will be taken away. The student will be suspended for a minimum of one day, and the phone will be returned to the parent.

ABSENCES

Students will have the same number of school days for each excused absence to make up any homework, tests or quizzes that were assigned during the absence(s). Daily work is not required for makeup. Previously assigned work that was due the date of an absence is due immediately upon return – additional time will result in a late penalty (see grading policy). It is the student’s responsibility to determine the assignment(s) missed and to complete it on time, as well as get caught up on any missed notes.

LATE WORK

Late work will be accepted three times per semester to receive full credit, then it will no longer be accepted and will result in a zero for the assignment.

GRADING POLICY

Your final grade in this class is a measure of student understanding of the state standards.

Grades are based on the following weighting system:

Assignments (daily review, homework, class work, projects, etc.) 40%

Assessments (unit tests, quizzes, final exam) 60%

A - - 100-90%

B - - 89-80%

C - - 79-70%

D - - 69-60%

F - - 59% and below

RETAKES

I do NOT accept retakes on tests or quizzes. However, I do offer a test correction form (after the bullets below are completed). Students can receive half-credit for correcting their test, if they correct the questions correctly. Correcting the test will be completed on the student's own time, in a setting approved by me, within three days of receiving their test results. It is the student's responsibility to schedule a time and receive permission to make corrections on their test. Additional to correcting the problem, the student must explain their error and explain what they did to correctly answer the problem.

· All assignments are completed for that unit (whether it's too late to receive credit or not)

· Complete a second study guide before the corrections are made
