Doane Choir South Africa

Students will understand the complex layers of the creative process, its reflection of human society, and its power to impact our human journey. Students will work to 1. Critically analyze and interpret artistic and/or aesthetic expression. 2. Use these insights to articulate the role of creativity in the examination of the human condition. Students will perform great art music of the past and present from both western and non-western traditions and perspectives, representative of a wide variety of cultures and faith traditions, in a multitude of world languages. Students will apply what we learn about South Africa's culture and history to our performances Students will reflect on the role and importance of the tour's experience on their life and education. Grow together as a unique ensemble and community, something that can only happen on a performance-based ensemble tour like this one. Explore the rich history of singing and music in South Africa and perform music from that tradition.

Summer 2022, May 17-31, 0-1 Credits

Learn all of the music for our tour program; it will all be acappella and we will perform it all memorized. Attend all rehearsals, concerts, and performances before the trip and during the trip Follow all published rules of tour (disseminated prior to departure from US) Participate in all cultural opportunities afforded by the trip More fully explained; memorizing and internalizing 60-70 minutes of acapella repertoire is a challenging, rewarding, educational, life-changing experience. Students will get an "inside look" at a composer's thought process by memorizing, performing, perfecting, and continuing to mull about an artistic creation, the product of another person's creative imagination. All of the composers and cultural contexts in which they composed will be discussed and explored. Students will perform in a variety of languages, including several of South Africa's 11 official languages, and will have the opportunity to think deeply about how their own experiences and lives can intersect and be enriched by the texts and music that we study, and the culture we encounter.

To that end, more important than academic interests, we seek hardy and resilient students who enjoy the physicality of hiking (and in general, extensive walking) kayaking, the adversity associated with unpredictable weather, as well as students who want to get close to the culture by using local transportation and eating local foods.
