Workforce development for people with intellectual disabilities; where we are now & where we go next

A follow on report from the 2016 Kent, Surrey and Sussex Intellectual Disability workforce project report "Workforce development for people with intellectual disabilities: One year on"

Easy Read Summary

April 2018

Introduction

In 2013 Health Education England was created and became responsible for the training and teaching of the staff that work with you.

Health Education England started to find out what people with Learning Disabilities and their families wanted from the people that work with you

We want to make lives better for people with Learning Disabilities

We also asked the people that work with you what they needed to be able to help people better

We told everyone how we did this in 2 reports

This is a an easy read summary version of a new report called "Workforce development for people with intellectual disabilities; where we are now & where we go next"

The report

We have written this update report very differently to help make it more useful to people

The report is only available on the internet, but can be read on you phone or tablet

It has less words and more links to other reports and videos explaining things

There are only 3 sections in this report

What have we done?

The government tells Health Education England every year what they want them to do.

This year the government said that Health Education England had to "Lead the health system" to change the way people work with you

This means that Health Education England needs to carry on finding out what is the best way to help and support people live a good life, and then make sure that staff know how to do this.

Between 2013 and 2017 we only worked across Kent, Surrey and Sussex but shared all our learning with everyone and met lots of people from all over the country

Other places in England wanted us to help them as well

London asked us to help them for one year between 2017 and 2018

We also started to work across the whole of the south of England in 2018

We now have a full time staff team to help do more work faster

During 2018 we have started to work with people with Autism (autistic people) and their families to find out what they want and need from a workforce

Where are we now? and what next?

Being able to speak to and hear from different people easily to find out what is working and what we should be doing is very important to us

By covering the south of England we have been able to get in contact with more people so we can learn and share more information

We have been able to support different groups of people to start to find ways to overcome some of the health challenges they told us about in past reports

When people work with us they have to share all their learning after we have supported them, as well as any tools that they make

The London Health Education England team are planning how they will work after September 2018, but we will continue to look after any work that is already happening and make sure that it is shared with everyone

An update on Transforming Care

Transforming care is a programme of work that the government said needed to happen after a news story called Winterbourne view was shown on television in 2011

Transforming care is all about improving health and care services so that more people can live in the community, with the right support and close to home.

England was divided up into groups to help make transforming care happen

These groups are made up of people, families, staff and funders who work together in a set area

Health Education England have offered help and are working with the groups to make a plan that tells everyone what people need and want from the people that work with them so that Transforming Care happens

Health Education England are also helping the groups in lots of other ways as well

London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex wrote a strategy in 2017 telling people how their partnerships would make this happen by the end of March 2019.
