Ocean pollution has been expanding over the years. The ocean is one of our greatest natural resources and we need to keep it clean. Animals are dying by the thousands. SOCER is going to help reduce the pollution in our ocean. It does this by picking up the waste and melting it down. It is also run by solar power reducing emissions into the environment.
Week 1
We started to discuss our theme, “Natural Resources”. We watched some online videos and read about natural resources. We were also assigned our groups. We have a group of five: Brindley Secrist, Leo High, Connor Goodwin, Ryan Pugmire, Justin Wray.
Week 2
We did some brainstorming. We brainstormed hard, going over different projects, then we came up with the S.O.C.E.R. (Submarine Ocean Cleaner Environmental Recycler). Some of our team members did not like this name. This was our second main project we came up with. Our first idea was an underwater drill, we decided against it. We got our final idea approved by Mrs. Leavitt. We started putting together blueprints. Mrs. Leavitt has us hand draw them using scaling. It took us a few tries to finally have a working blueprint.
Week 3
We have been working on our cardboard prototype. It is very rough, we don’t think it looks good at all, but Mrs. Leavitt said it looks good. We feel she is so lying. It looks more like a box with a few fans sticking out with one tube. We put a lot of work on the net, which we hand made.
Week 4
We started Tinkercad. We did the tutorial and messed around with designing. At times we were very frustrated, a few of us didn’t get it at first. In the end, though, we all learned how to do it. We designed and made quilt squares. Mrs. Leavitt then let us design a few small items ourselves, so we are prepared for our projects.
Week 5
We started to make the web page. We started by making a google doc and we then copied and pasted it to our website. We found that when we copied and pasted we couldn't edit so started editing the web page right on the sites page. We also started our design on Tinkercad. We tried to do it to scale, but messed up quite a few times but we are finally getting it to scale. We finally figured out what our slogan is going to be it is “Kick the trash right back”.
Week 6
Our group finally started printing the S.O.C.E.R. project. Our first propeller was a huge flop. The propeller itself was small but the hole to put the motor axle was way too small. We are still working on propellers and the main design, but we are getting closer. We have had many reprints and design alterations along the way.
Week 7
Our group finally started printing the hull, arm and solar box. Our solar box was too small so hopefully, we’ll get it right the second time. We probably will have to reprint the hull because the solar box was made to fit on the hull.
Week 8
We finished our project and presentation. Our group had to present to the whole class. We will be having our local, District FabSLAM tonight. We will be presenting to judges, with our parents there to watch. Hope we win!
