Custom Maps

    Introducing Custom Maps

Players can create their own maps, and download and play maps that have been written by other players. This page tells you how.

How to upload a map to the game

First, find a map you want to download, and copy it's URL. If this is your first time, try this one:

Next, in the Retro Flight app, tap the "Options" button at the bottom left of the main menu. It will take you to the Options menu, which looks like this:

On the top-right of that page is a map slider. Drag it to the right. A disclaimer should pop up, and if you accept that, you will see the "Custom Map" page, which looks like this:

Now paste the URL of the map into the top text box, then tap the "Download" button. If you are connected to the internet, and you entered the URL of a valid map, then you should get a message telling you that everything went OK and the map is now ready to play. The map should now run when you press Play in the main menu.

Please note that maps that have been written for sandbox will only work in sandbox mode, and other maps will not work in sandbox mode.

You can use one of the sample maps listed below, or you can look on the internet for maps other people have made.

If you change map information in the bottom text box, don't forget to tap "Validate" before you leave the Custom Map menu, or the app will ignore your changes.

    Sample Maps

Here are some sample maps. They were made for Retro Flight version 1.9.x so are quite basic, but will still work in version 2 and will give you an idea of how they work.

This next sandbox map was originally made for testing, but now you can download it for fun. It starts the player in the racetrack surrounded by every vehicle in the game, including the new Tank, Submarine & UFO. If you've just clicked the "Find Maps" button and are looking for something to play that's new, get this one.

As well as a link, I've included the URL in plain text so you can easily copy it to the URL field.

The rest of the maps are only of interest to people wanting to make their own maps.

These next maps were output from the start of a game. Use them if you want to use one of the normal in-game maps as a starting point. The first one is fairly small, but the others are huge.

Please note that the first three can't be played in sandbox mode, but the forth one can only be played in sandbox mode.

This next map isn't playable, it's intended as a really simple starting point for you to build your own maps. It's just the in-game "Simple Map", with everything deleted that wasn't essential, and the JSON keys put into a sensible order.

Want to make your own maps?

Please do! There is an illustrated map-making tutorial, along with a reference guide and various useful links via the "Make Maps" page. It has everything you need to know to start making your own Retro Flight maps and share them with the world. If you make a good one, let me know and I'll put it on this page.

    Plans for the future

Custom maps is something I was experimenting with. If it takes off and players make some good ones, I'll expand and improve it so you can do much more in a custom map, build your own objects, add your own missions, maybe even add some nice graphical map editing tools.
