Puppets by Jae
Thailand
Puppets by Jae pays attention to equality, diversity, immigration and democracy. My works often incorporate local mythologies and social issues. Most of their performances include at least two types of puppets, such as shadow puppets, table-top puppets, mouth puppets and masks. All puppets are made by me. I have been trying to do simple plays as a way to encourage the audience to express their creativity.
My works often incorporate local mythologies and social issues as I think most mythologies have rigid structures. I always start with the themes and issues that I want to communicate with the audiences, and then seek the mythologies, stories or fairytales that resonate with those issues. I sometimes create original stories. The creative process then comes to creating a storyboard with the inspirations Jae finds from art books and the internet. After designing the characters and stage, she searches for materials. Sometimes Jae works the other way around to begin with the materials, and then the design.
I believe that puppetry is not only an art, but a skill with power, imagination and magic. When communicating social issues with others, puppetry is a gentle and tender tool. I pay close attention to social issues. That is why my puppet shows are not solely for entertainment. They are fun and meaningful at the same time.
Most of my works are nonverbal and performed with a live band.
Jae
