Exploring the oceans requires instruments that can operate under stringent conditions. Pressure, corrosion, low visibility, limited range/bandwidth communication, and the vast size of the ocean are some of the challenges that make exploring the ocean a challenging, time-consuming, and expensive endeavor. The Ocean Exploration Lab (OEL) is developing new sensors and equipment that allow us to more effectively operate, communicate, and sense in the ocean. In particular, we are developing new capabilities for small, man-portable Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), novel optical communication and sensing schemes , and methods to control buoyancy.
