ICT Tools & Resources

This is a great free online tool that teachers and students can use. It brings history to life, but can be used for almost any subject area. For this tour, St Luke's Missionary Journeys, a lower years secondary religion class were given time to explore this tour that I created. There is space provided to insert images, historical dates and facts - really, to tell a story. It is also very interactive. Students were encouraged to zoom in and use 3D mode, to explore the topography of the environment, see the city streets, etc. They really enjoyed this task.

Then, they created their own, applying research skills applied in class to gather information about (in this class example) a historical figure, such as an early Christian apostle, and then present this information in a creative and interactive manner.

As the Google Tours are very easy to use and share (all you need is a Google Account, and then the Google Tour link), it allowed me to do the following as a teacher:

  • Diagnostic + Formative Assessment - gain direct insight into their application of research skills. How wide was their research? Did they evaluate their sources? Did they use quotations and embed these correctly? This is invaluable information for future lessons on research skills and using sources, and also allows them to practice those skills in an engaging way.
  • Numeracy & ICT - tick this boxes! Dates, timelines, distances, reading map keys and symbols, using ICT to Redifine the research task (SAMR model) - really, this is only limited by your imagination as a teacher, as Google Tour's could be used in most subject areas.
