FOR SALE, REFITTED

Luna

A classic and unique staysail world cruising schooner, refitted.

An Italian beauty, designed by a champion, Dick Carter

Sailing Yacht Luna is a center cockpit, schooner rigged, auxiliary diesel sailboat. The hull is hand laid fiberglass with a raked bow, rounded bilge, swept counter and sugar scoop transom. The hull shows a centerboard keel and stainless-steel hydraulic cylinder. The decks and superstructure have a flush weather deck with a raised cabin trunk surrounding the center cockpit, with a custom hard dodger. The vessel was designed by Dick Carter and originally constructed to RINA standards by Lu Crestitalia S.p.A in Ameglia, La Spezia, Italy. She was launched at Cantieri Navali de La Spezia, Italy in 1980.  She is solid. She loves the wind and handles rough weather smoothly. She has circumnavigated and spent most of her life in the Caribbean.  Her self-tacking “luna rig” is perfect for short handing. She sleeps 8 in 4 cabins, with 2 heads.

The hull construction is hand laid resin fiberglass reinforced laminate with molded gel cote topsides. Inward turning hull flange is bonded hull to the deck joint. Flush weather decks and the cabin trunk are raised at the center cockpit, with a hard top and forward fixed windows. Deck surfaces are polyurethane painted nonskid in a light grey color with good nonskid properties. All deck hatches are NEW Bomar aluminum Ocean Series. The nonskid is bordered by painted white surfaces.

Hull and deck support is derived from seven bulkheads and partial bulkheads with longitudinal stringers on either side of the bilge continuing to the hull deck join.  Bulkheads have continuous secondary bonding to the hull interior with fiberglass tabbing. The secondary bonding is as sound. The interior cabin sole framing and integral molded furniture provide additional support and reinforcement throughout.

Exterior – beautiful

The bottom has a rounded bilge with moderate deadrise on either side of the centerboard trunk.  The running gear exits the hull aft through the shaft log via a straight stainless steel 1 ½ inch shaft with a bulkhead mounted bearing, the Cutlass Bearing, supporting a four-blade bronze propeller.

The topside surfaces have mild tumblehome and a virtually straight sheer line with polyester painted white finish with a navy-blue sheer stripe. An aluminum slotted toe rail surrounds the vessel and fastens at the hull deck joint. The transom has a swept counter with a sugar scoop and stainless-steel swim ladder storage.

The forward deck has a nice camber with flush decks leading aft on either side of the center cockpit. The anchor roller is forward with chain passing over the mounting tang and between the double headstays. The forestay chain plate is through fastened to the stem showing integral to the deck plate, anchor roller and anchor chain guide. A double course stainless steel bow pulpit, with port and starboard running lights, leads to a double course surrounding lifelines showing a one-inch tubular stainless steel top rail and wire rope lower lifeline supported by stainless steel stanchions. The stanchions are doubled laterally at several locations as well as at side boarding gates. The stern pulpit is integral to the radar and dinghy davit arch with solar panels mounted above. A stern light is mounted below the radar. A double course stainless steel wire rope closure connects port and starboard stern pulpits inboard of the sugar scoop steps. The cabin trunk is raised at the center cockpit, continuing to the aft deck with side mounted stainless-steel opening portlights and opening hatches providing ventilation throughout.

The center cockpit has a hard top with solar panels mounted above, and the main jib traveler track is mounted laterally aft. Large, fixed windows protect the centerline companionway and engine instrumentation. Drop down canvas curtains with Eisen glass windows stow, rolled to the hard top on both port and starboard. In the center is the helm pedestal showing a wheel mount and instrument cluster. The single lever engine shift and throttle is mounted inboard to port aft of the helm. Cockpit seats are custom fit canvas covered foam cushions. The cockpit sole has a teak grate with adequate drainage.

The flush aft deck gives access to propane storage and various stores in an opening deck hatch. This locker is sealed from the rest of the vessel and vented overboard. A propane tank is secured inside the locker, and it is separated from the rest of the locker contents.

The rig has roller furling head sails (Genoas) forward from each mast head. Masts have single swept back welded aluminum spreaders and cast aluminum bases. The genoas are fitted with NEW Furlex roller furlers. The genoa tracks are self-tacking genoa tracks. The forward mast is fitted with double headstays. A spinnaker pole track is fitted to the forward mast with two locking pole cars. Spinnakers poles can be stowed along the lifelines, port and starboard, attached to stanchions.  The standing rigging is stainless steel 1/19 wire rope side stays, fit with Hi-Mod terminal ends aloft and secured to stainless steel mast tangs, through bolted at the mast. Deck level fittings have Hi-Mod terminal ends to closed body turnbuckles terminating at the stainless-steel chain plate clusters, through fastened at the inboard deck. Welded stainless steel chain plates are through bolted to substantial fiberglass knees. The roller furling head stays are terminated in swage fittings. A NEW AIS-enabled vhf antenna is installed on the main mast with a drip loop. The main mast carries deck lighting. The forward masthead shows a foredeck light, steaming light, mast head tri color, anchor light, static dissipator, anemometer, VHF antenna and steaming light. The mast heads are connected with a triatic utilizing Hi-Mod fittings, with an adjustable closed body turnbuckle at the forward mast head. The running rigging throughout is NEW.  Halyards are double braid line returned through mast head sheaves. The masts have accommodation for additional running rigging where spinnaker pole topping lifts, additional halyards and other rigging could be added. Decks have additional genoa tracks with cars. Each genoa has an adjustable self-tacking sail control track. The track ends and cars are Barbarossa equipment. Turning blocks are all NEW equipment. Control lines are led to the cockpit where four NEW self-tailing winches condition. Each mast has a single winch with clutch.

Winches:

Cockpit: 2 NEW Lewmar EVO #65 self-tailing, 2- NEW Lewmar EVO #55 self-tailing

Did this little hitchhiker make this mess?

Yes! It’s self-tacking.  The Luna Rig makes it happen. And talking about safety, there is NO BOOM! Easy tacking and reefing.

Lifting Keel – like magic

The keel is a stainless-steel pivoting centerboard with a (NEW) hydraulic lifting arm, positioned in a keel trunk. Retraction and deployment utilize a (NEW) Hydro drive self-contained DC power pack with integral reservoir tank and manual override pump. Visual inspection of the centerboard trunk is possible through an opening port light in the midships walkway and through a fixed port light in the port bunk cabin. Electric controls are mounted in a panel at the midship walkway and show down, up and stop operation with a smooth operation to the retracted position. The retracting keel allows for a deep, powerful, ocean going draft of 9.5’ (2.85m) while the retracted draft of only 4.5’ (1.4m) that allows for entrance to otherwise inaccessible locations. Go aground sailing? Just lift the keel and back off.

The first photo shows the keel down, for excellent offshore and heavy weather management.  The second shows the keel retracted, perfect for gunkholing, a must-have in the Bahamas.
