To our surprise, we found that nucleoplasm is less dense than the cytoplasm, while nucleoli — phase-separated membraneless compartments inside nuclei — exhibit significantly higher mass density. This scenario did not change during the progression through the cell cycle; and even when we tried really hard to change it by drug-induced perturbations of the cytoskeleton and chromatin compaction.
