Scuba Dive on Unidentified Wrecks

Date: (tentative) February 2020

Group size: 10 persons maximum

Objective:

  • Begin the excavation of one of two unidentified wreck sites in Monte Cristi Bay, Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic with the goal of removing artifacts for identification and future study. The wrecks are located in shallow water (less that 4 meters deep), and within 15 minutes of our dive headquarters.

Our typical day runs from 8:00AM to 3:00PM. When on a dive site, we eat lunch on the boat.

Tentative expedition schedule:

  • Day 1: Mission briefing with all dive participants. Assign tasks to all team members.
  • Day 2: Spend entire day on dive sites, installing coral protective barriers, begin removing debris and taking measurements.
  • Day 3: All day on dive sites, Use metal detectors and underwater dredge to remove sand from area.
  • Day 4: All day on dive sites, begin identifying and removing wreck artifacts.
  • Day 5: Half-day on dive site, final gathering of wreck artifacts. The afternoon will be spent reviewing all of the evidence collected.

After the dive expedition:

In the months and years following each expedition, archaeology students from universities around the world are invited to clean, study, and research the artifacts at our marine archaeological laboratory in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic.

Documenting the dive:

  • Each stage of our expedition will be documented by our resident underwater video/ photo journalist. All participants will receive a complementary copy of this expedition video along with a Certificate of Participation.
