Prayers & Poems

The first shrine I set up back in 2001.

If you are a devotee of the Goddess Athena, I hope these will prove inspirational for you. When 'those people' desecrated the temple, they could NOT desecrate the hearts or minds of the followers. And the goddess will have her way.  The message has been clear for a long time: the Iliad and the Odyssey were poems, long and mighty. The great relics also survived, many buried in the earth. As they are uncovered, we can remember the greatness of the civilisation the ancestors built. And we can rebuild with new prayers and new poems. As with the traditions of the northern religions, the whole spirituality was transmitted through poetry. So with the artifacts in our hands and the poems and paians once more in our hearts, we piece together the components of the ancient religions. And things are different today.  It is no doubt impossible to revert to what we were - we are 20th century folk, seeing through the modern lens at something that is ancient and from a very different lifestyle, culture and perspective. With modern science pressing forth into places, illuminating the unknown and bringing it to our eyes to observation, we might feel that the older things and the gods of yore have no place in the world. I want to mention that this is their world. And that much of what the ancients held as myth are competent observations and explanations, scientifically, philosophically and religiously.  It might take a long time of study. It took me about four years of intensive study to realise that the nature of the gods and cosmology fit well, and can fit in many cases with modern science.  Yet, as the world decays about us and material things become meaningless, there's that elusive something that somehow seems to beckon to us and yet, hides from us at the same time. Here's my quest in poem form.

1. A PRAYER FOR GUIDANCE

Great Master, Wise Lady,

Of  Owl Eyed Auspice,

Seeing over the minds of men

And guarding them,

Please be my guide!

Athena! You are the wisdom sought

By wise men  and those of royal court,

For you are the measure of things

That are as they are

Of things that are not

As they are not

Unspoken truth!

You are the spear

That always hits!

No question outsmarts you

No secrets are too deep!

I am the question

You are the answer

Grant me your guidance

Be my Torch light

On this dark,

Abyssal night!

2. A PRAYER FOR VICTORY

NIKE! NIKE! NIKE!

Unstoppable power!

Like a dragon you strike fear into mortal men, Athena Nike!

What is the greatest panacea? Victory!

What is the greatest goddess? Athena!

What is the greatest wisdom? Athena Nike!

Guide this hand ,

To inflict much woe

On those who earn your wrath

Your enemy shall be our foe!

You arrive like a shooting star

To succor your subjects

And embrace them

Within your cloak of power

There is no hope , For those who rouse your anger!

One look from you, a legion takes flight

One curse can sack a town!

One thrust from your spear

Can cause a lightning bolt

Searing to crackle down!

Destroying like a Pompey

Those that abuse your precinct

And your Father's name.

Minerva Victrix!

Within your Holy Mandate

Victory is assured!

Great Warrior Maiden Guide us,

Within your sanctioned behest,

Within the cover of your Holy Aegis,

We will fight in your dread shadow,

Promachos! You are our shield,

Our victory crown!

3. A PRAYER FOR WISDOM

Queen of Wisdom

August Master

My lantern Guide

And Savant Goddess,

Open my mind

And Heart

To your words.

Marshal of Wisdom

You give the gift as you resolve,

As a Lance of Glory,

Heralding your puissant strike!

Or like a silent owl

A glide on the Nights wind

With talons wide!

Mighty Athena! Let me be re-born of your thunderbolt!

Abrogate the dark veils of the mortal mind,

Cut them away like a sword!

Burn the webs away with

Your Holy Torch,

Welcome me to the sacred place

Illuminate the archive porch

Let joy fall upon  my face!

Man has wandered abroad

From your ushered path,

He has let go of your cogent hand

To ravage spirits, soul and land,

Remold me in your chosen way,

Breathe once more

Prima-pneuma I pray!

4. A POEM OF BIRTH & DEATH

I was mud and water

In the dark abyss of eternal time

Of forgetful rivers

Just mud without rhyme.

She made me from mud

And breathed into me

The power of thought

Joy creativity

And she set me free

In a land of wondrous sight

Of brightly lit green fields

And dark sacred nights

I'm filled with music

And songs I'll forever sing

I was kissed by the Goddess

And found beauty in everything

And when my trek is over

In her arms I shall once more fall

Until her song recalls me

And I am kissed once more...

5. ATHENA-GIVER OF PURPOSE

A PROEM

Athena, Dashing Maiden

Fire eyed, gleaming bright

How can I say it

It hardly sounds and it is gone,

But my thanks will go on forever

And wherever you go,

I'll try to follow.

You are the Giver of Purpose

In a time of great distress

The Rat Race sucks humanity dry

But your people are immune

To the humdrum hate and cry.

I carry your temple with me

Deep in my Pagan Heart

And I am driven, so driven

And smitten by your aims

They must come true for others

As they've come true for us.

Hit me! Show me your plan!

Let's work on them together

For the benefit of man.

6. ONWARDS!

A POEM

When I'm down

Without a friend

With a big ugly frown,

There's someone else

Helping me along the trail

Athena, My Friend, My Master

The Glittering Prize of Heaven

Walks beside me, always smiling,

Always empowering, urging me on.

They say the gods don't touch!

But touch me you have Athena

Not with your hands, or Thunder

But with your loyal friendship

Casting Darkness asunder...

7. BARBARIAN BATTLE SONG

A PROEM

You brought Gifts

Of wealth and truest joy

To grace my home and brighten my life

And make it fullest to the top

Like an overflowing cup

Sparkling wine up to the rim...

Make your home with me,

Be part, O Goddess, of my family!

I'll give you a shrine

Surrounded by flowers frail

And your Holy Cup will brim full

Of my Barbarian Ale...

Make this house your Temple

Make my heart beat out your praise

I'll follow you forever

To the end of my mortal days...

Athena, Daughter of Zeus

Thunderbolt of the skies,

Fury of the battle throng

Make me your servant friend

"Nike!" shall be my Battle Song

Until my joyous end...

8. BEQUEST US !

A PRAYER

My friend

My Best friend

Guardian over me

And all that I cherish

Athena, Dread in War

Kind in Peace.

Draw us nearer

In pact and love

To you, dearest one

Strong and sweet,

Make us to you

As adopted children.

Master, make us

How you would like us,

We give to you permit

To strategically implicate!

Bequest us! Drive us like steeds!

We will pull your chariot

With all our strength

For you, and you alone...

No one else shall we pull...

Athena, Holy Daughter of Zeus

By the Pillars of Eight,

We await your power-word...

And maintain the watch-fires

On your Holy Mountain.

Come drive us! DRIVE US!

We will be your horses

Your Oxen, your Bees.

We will be your Little Owls

And the warriors from The Frieze.

9. FINAL MOMENT (Of Odysseus)

A POEM

Bright Nights Moon

And Sacred Stars

A deep blue velvet sky

My  warmest Blanket of slumber...

Scintillating stars

Sacred shimmering stars, Athena.

Sunlight's prismatic halo

Lancing rays like holy spears

Gentle glowing flowers

Emerald Boughs of mighty trees

Crystal Fresh Waters chill

The finest ruby wine, Athena.

Glitterdust of brightsprarkle Gold

Ancient tomes crisp and old

Burnished tripods of reddest bronze

And porcelains depicting might

Swathes of auspicious saffron weave

And all manner of other things I leave

For you, my undying friend,  Athena.

10. DIRECT ME!

A PRAYER

Things Go Wrong

In mortal methods

But You, Athena

Are the element

Of Perfection

Of Perfections.

With Your Guidance,

The cobwebs of failure

Are burnt away

By your harbinger flame

The Torch of Enlightenment

Purifies even the fool

Harness Our Minds

Yoke us if needs be

There is no better fate

Than to be envisioned

Directed like a true spear

Tangential to Mankind

Towards your Target

Your perfection of us

In your ways...

11.  IN HER WAKE!

A PRAYER

Wherever She Goes,

We will follow,

Through heavens and hells

We will attempt to stay

In her wake, made for us!

Athena the unstoppable!

Our call for Justice

Has been heard

Though there is also it seems

A time to fight.

Athena! Please champion us!

Whoever has you as their leader

Is the best  in battle, the strongest  too,

Not only in their powers,

But of those from you.

Wherever you take us, Athena

We follow with trust

For justice and truth,

Take us where you must!

12. A DAILY PRAYER

Great Athena!

You are the Keeper

Of all the best treasures!

Your ways

Are the best ways

Your thoughts

The best thoughts.

As mortals we plough

Our way through

The mud of life

We will do the work

Only you can plan the plan

To turn our effort

To prosperity

Or gloom.

Wisdom unlocks Knowledge

 It opens doors

To treasuries and orchards

So bridle us with reigns

To stop our wild horses...

We can work and do our part,

But without the blessing

Of Our Friend and Master

Our mud may not prosper us

Without the favour of our Goddess

The plough is a futile thing.

So bless us For Today as we acknowledge

And revere you! Glory to You Athena!

13. A 3rd DAY PRAYER

Hail Wise Goddess!

We salute you

This day!

Let not the smallness

Of that which we offer

Dictate the magnitude

But let our love

Show you in secret

How much we adore you!

What would it matter

If a thousand white bulls

Were circled around your altar

And slain,

However marvellous their savour

If it was done by someone devoid

For your temple is in our hearts

And warmed by our love,

Fed constant by our living blood

And filled with the music

Of our constant heartbeat praise!

You always accepted

The pure gifts however rough or quaint

Please accept then

These little gifts

They're free from any taint.

14. A SHORT PRAYER

Athena

Great Goddess

My best friend

Through all times...

How gifted we are

To have someone like you

Always thoughtful

Always helpful.

Thank you for the good times

Thank you for the things we learn

From the bad times too...

But most of all Athena

Precious Athena

Thank you for you!

15. SUN AND MOON

A PRAYER

Great Athena

How easy it is

To adore you

To see the wise

And the beautiful

Together in you

Strength with beauty

Wisdom with knowledge;

You are like a fine poem

That everyone

Even the Gods no doubt

Stop to contemplate.

You are like a rising sun,

Powerful and Glorious

And like a lambent moon

Gentle and reflective

Both bringing their light

Into my life...

So much I have gained

Yet so little I can give

Except what adoration

That rises in my heart

This my treasure chest

I give to you

What I hold as best...

16. PROMACHOS CLUB PRAYER

Glorious Goddess Athena,

Favourite daughter of Zeus

Your words are the best words

Your teaching wise and friendly.

As we learn, Please bless us here,

This small club seeking the knowledge of you.

We hope that this club

Is a small beacon

For those that seek you

To help them on their way

Where they might rest a little

Under the shade of this olive tree,

Before resuming their path.

Please bless us in this small service

Which is given to honour you!

Athena, Sit with us

Round this flicker campfire

We'll rest a while

From life's rank and file

And all the worldly dire

Let's just for now be Happy

Across the heavens

We have met once more

Our journeys collide

In this most sacred hour

When with you we can forget

And we can sing our life's song

Friend Athena, with you we belong!

17. THE ASCENT

A PROEM

 Athena! Lead on!

I will follow as I said I would

Over misty hollows and green fields good

And through whatever dark vales and Chasms

That must be tread,

Onwards to the mountains head.

From that point

We might view

If only I Can keep up with you!

I am no climber

And were mortal lungs

Ever made to take in

At the pinnacles so high

Of sacred Olympus

White and Pure

On that Bright Blue Sky?

Forgive me for falling

Forgive me for dangling

So helpless like a spider

On a single strand

If I were stronger...

On that peak we'd stand.

Lead on Athena,

Your glory will light

The crisp chill pathway

My truest friend, Both Night and Day.

18. ATHENA, WEAVER OF WORLDS

A PROEM (PRAYER & POEM)

Great Goddess Athena

Favourite Daughter of Zeus

Favourite Goddess

My Favourite Friend

For all time...

Athena

Breeze of my soul

Athena

Beat of my heart

Athena

Close to me

Though we are worlds apart.

I hunted for you

Everywhere

From wanderer

To wanderer

Star to Star

 - I found you

You were close to me

From the onset

Of my odyssey.

You were with me

Even though I did not know

You have watched over me

And others too

For a thousand generations

A thousand lifetimes through...

Athena,

Your solution is sought

Our mortal problems are like weeds,

Needing to be uprooted

By your strong arm,

Our fabric prone to fray

We need your skill to help us,

Weave us into a success

And a pattern you enjoy

Great Weaver,

Of Wondrous Worlds!

19.  PRAYER FOR MORNING

(A request for Guidance)

Out of the chill dark

Rising hope bright and wide

As long as, Great Athena

You're on my side.

Another day

Another mission

Help me away from Hubris

To gain some proper vision.

A good morning wish

For you my Goddess,

The birds again full of scintillating songs

Worshipping in hearty throngs.

20. PRAYER FOR EVENING

Completion of another day

Help me Great Athena

Spend time in a noble way

In winds of trouble not to sway.

Evening blessings for my friend

From the beginning to the bright days end

I hope that there's some use be found

In the distances I've travelled over ground.

Soon the Night will descend,

And the chill abyss infinite above

Will not devoid us of our love.

We will stay true for you

Amidst the darkness lit by stars

Our lantern oil, In sacred jars...

21. PRAYER FOR NIGHT

The highest place

Darkest black and blue

Studded stars

In dark solo space

It's sacred through and through

It's a glance at infinity past

For infinity future too

Vast magnificence, timelessness

Darkest black and blue.

Mighty Athena,

As I stare into the heavens

I realize I am small and frail

Liable to succumb to any storm

To any cosmic gale,

My fate is in the lap of the Gods

As is the whole of the human race

Let me sleep in your dread shadow

Under the watch of your noble face,

Close to your great strong hands

Protected through the chilling night

Whilst on these shadowed lands

Free from flight or fright.

22. SERENADE TO THE GODDESS

A POEM

Great Athena

Favourite Daughter

Of Mighty Zeus

May the velvet

Of dark sacred space

Be your gown

May the stars

As scintillating jewels

Crown you timelessly

 May the planets

 Be as pearls

 A necklace for you

May the million mortals

Each a special voice

Be a chorus of worship

May all good beings

Treasure your Holy Name

And love you like breath.

23. PRAYER FOR WORLD JUSTICE

Great Athena

Gracious and Wise

Strong of arm

Full of noble beauty

Please hear my fleeting voice

I am a powerless  man

With no ways or means

I struggle each day

To make my way

And my end shall be

Like others of no power.

No one shall remember me

None of my works shall survive.

But you Athena,

You are strong from the onset

From the dawn of time

Till it's end

You are mighty

And your choice shall be the choice.

I implore you Athena,

To force responsibility

Upon those leaders of men

Who scoff at correctness

And who hate Justice

With all their hearts.

They poison nations

With the smoke of their industry

They conspire to drive

Their corporations like tanks over the

Crushed lives of the third world

And keep vast arrays of people impoverished

Within their own house,

To do their bidding in a desperate way.

They feed them evil things

And disease them

To provide cures at great cost.

Innocent men are jailed

Guilty men walk free

Not by accident

But by design...

Justice is beaten and stoned

And dragged like Hector through the streets of every nation,

And they mock her like barking dogs biting at her legs.

You my great and Noble friend

Are the Maker and Destroyer of Nations,

Your choice will be the choice.

As the men of old implored you

I implore you now to root out and truncate the tendons of the many handed ones

The 500 Giants of East and West

North and South who sprang

from the corrupt lines of the fake books

They gathered all the fruits of the earth

And devoured them in an orgy

Refusing to plant their seeds so that

The many mortals could eat in turn.

And that which the Gods provided

For the mass of men

Is burnt with hatred by them in a cloud of spite.

The smell of their crime may already have reached Olympus,

And the flood of milk has been poured away,

Lest it enter the mouths of the hungry.

These giants will be easy for you, Athena.

Like the giants you slew of old,

They were no match for you!

They fell before you in rows,

And none could outwit you.

So here is my prayer, Athena.

I await your victory over the world of men,

And the establishment of your throne.

My prayer and my hope is with you.

24. STAR SHINE MOTHER

A POEM

Athena is no Dark Princess

She is no Queen of Night

She is the Star Shine Mother

Reborn the Daughter Bright,

Mortals have been blinded

Not in blackness but by white,

Her radiance is not shadow,

But ambient Astral light.

She is no Great Dark Mother

She is no purest YIN, She is the bright side

Of wisdoms circle so complete

That YIN-YANG fits within.

When I stare into the starry sky

I always gasp with awe,

To see the Goddess all about

Brightness, Darkness and more

25. SABBATH PRAYER

Great Athena

Majestic

Glorious

Favourite Daughter of Zeus

Spear Shaker

Shield shining

Mother and Maker

Enlightenment Guide.

Fortifier of the Good

Jurisprudent Scale,

Empress of the Sacred City

Emancipator

Protectors Powerful.

Whatever they say

To usurp -

Accusations dark

Pointing fingers of Slurs and Rot

Your incorruptible Spirit

Will shine on Invincible,

Unbending and true.

I saw the face of glory

I saw the heart of truth

Nothing they say

Will turn us from you.

Athena, invincible,

Shake away the shadows,

And that Malady of Bright Spear

A warrior for you.

Help him fight the darkness off.

I pray also for this club,

Its members and their lives,

That your good fortune gifts

Will reinforce them

As your Sons and Daughters...

A small wish for you

Great Goddess,

On your 3rd Day

 I hope all your people

Drink and share

United in the motherly embrace

Of the most noble

Maiden of Might.

26. A PRAYER OF WONDER

Great Athena what were you thinking

When you picked up that clay

Were you thoughtful or was it for fun

When you gave me my form and let me walk, jump, dance, run...?

Was it an experimental work

Or was it a prank

When you both made us on that potter's wheel

From clay, soft and dank?

Athena, Maker of Mankind

Mistress like illuminating Sunlight Rays

Mistress of the wise Star Spangled Ways

Please do not forget us,

Whoever we may have been,

Whatever we were made,

We have become as if your children,

When we made you our Queen.

We started from mud and water,

And yes, that we shall return there too

But our love will stay forever

And we will always to you be true.

Were we once dolls or golems?

Were we some ant-farm magnified?

It seems that we became like children

To love you amplified!

27. WHEN I DIE...    (About the Afterlife)

A POEM

Rumbling chariot wheels

Thunderous roaring rims

The sparkling rays

First morn light

Sever the darkness

Of my final night.

Pulled by Sun Serpents

Dragons of Might

Aboard that Chariot

I will alight.

With "Athenatos"

"Undying" Athena,

My Driver Guide

The Cosmic Weaver.

The wheels begin

And the past is gone

As She drives across

The dire river,

Deep and dark.

No boat takes me

No coin is paid

There's no stopping

Heavens Maid.

No Turning Left

No Turning Right

She takes the straight way

Out of my night

Towards Her City

Shining Bright,

Through Fruit Groves

And Flower Fields

With Powerful, Constant

Forceful Wheels.

There it stands!

High on a Hill!

A Polis of the Pure

A Place of Power

Along the Way of Wisdom.

Then I am on foot once more

Looking around

No sickness, No poor.

High above, upon a rock

Athena lives

Amidst her flock

Our Sacred Goddess

Enthroned on High

On Pure Olympus

When I die.

28. THE OWL & OLIVES

A POEM

Garlands of flowers are about our heads, We wave Olive branches, In honour of Her,

Lanterns a-bright, Torches aflicker in the dark of night,

Fine wine heightens our souls as we look at the train of stars.

And we eat to fullness with our arms around each other And thank with pouring of the reddest wines,

Owl children wander the Orchard, And sing their songs to Celestial chimes.

All this would be empty without the knowledge from you, Athena,

You are the completion of our perfection, One day we will meet you and crown you with our love.

For what is love, Without the wisdom, What is the arrow, Without the bow,

From that sacred tree of yours...

"What of the Owl, haunting with hooting  On the velvet mists of night?"

"My Wise Watcher - My Moon Wing, Nothing missed by its bright eye,

Wise Guardian - Tree Top Warden, Guardian of Barns

Against The Bringer of plague and harms."

29.  MORNING PRAYER

Athena, Great Goddess,

Favourite Daughter of Zeus

Please, smile upon this small home

And decree prosperity for its people.

Forgive us our inadequacies,

And our inabilities as

We are mortals with many flaws

And prone to error.

We look to you Great Athena,

You are our champion,

Our Lady of the Shield

Please Mistress of Excellence

Cultivate us to meet your ideal,

That we become a pleasure to you.

Empower us within your design

That we may become masters of skill,

Self-sufficient and Industrious,

Casting off slavery and poverty,

Unify us within the demesne of your power

And direct us this day in the course of noble ways,

So that we may be seen as reflective of your might,

And thoughtful of your illuminations.

30. GIANT DRAGGER

POEM

Athena Nike!

Throw those bolts!

Spear Shaker!

Grab those giants

And drag them

By beard

And hair!

Men who think

That they are Gods - Beware!

Athena will grab them

By their hair and drag them wailing

To their doom

Punishment for them

Will loom!

No one can beat her

Zeus always watching sure

A Power House of Heaven

Mighty Massive

Arms of Glory

The Things of Legends

And Mythos Story!

And those that meet her gaze

With blatant mortal pride

Casting not their eye down humble

Find themselves a frightening rumble

Reeds must bend or snap to resist the fated fail

Against Injustice and Politic Spite

Giant Dragging Athena will prevail!

So with all the turbulence

Of all the gnashing hate

Hide behind the Heavy Shield

Of Athena, Strong and Great

Rebuild your strength as you need

Consolidate - Time and Courage will

Outpace their speed.

31. POEM TO ATHENA ERGANE

I Waggle Dance

For my Queen Bee

All day heavy work

To make Sweet Honey

Listen to my humming wings

Bringing her sugar sweet things

Incense to calm - placate

Athena Ergane, Goddess Great

I serve! In my happy buzz

I serve! My outline is a busy fuzz

I serve! Till when I'm old

To give Athena my spirit gold.

POEM

The Goddess

Gave me a singing heart

To help me through the day

And a giant stride

A mile wide

With a soul happily astray,

She also gave me the inner rhyme

To fill my inner being

And a mountain to climb

With a view so fine

And a mind to plan the way

All things

May they love you

And all things sing with cheer

How a goddess came into my life

So Kind and Wise and Dear....

And all I know is that when we meet

You'll ask me what I did

And I'll say my heart it sang so loud

And I danced it with my feet....

38. IRON MAN

PROEM

Great Goddess, Mighty like a storm,

Gentle like a breeze,

Thunderbolt booming,

Whisperer like trees.

I hear you.

You came across this iron man.

A hollow man in many parts.

You put me together

And gave me a heart.

Now I live keen happy

With owl eye joy

Seeing beauty everywhere. :)

They say you are tough.

They don't know your finer strings

Finding and mending

Even the ugly things.

39. THE SEARCHERS

PRAYER

Great Athena

Kind guide and protector,

Many searchers for truth

Permit us to set our sights On you,

Great Goddess Golden Shining Holy True,

This way we'll follow a holy path

And our reward not be born of wrath.

In this complex world of Other

We turn to you as children to their Mother

Empower us please and grant us the win

And strength to push through confusions din.

Athena Goddess

In the saffron dress

Forever to be true...

That would be just grand

Nothing breaks the scene

So will you be there

When I am there

To see the final hours

Of the universe

In all its verse

From that ragged cliff

The abyss that yawns

And we're all forlorn

And without our powers...

Hand in hand

A fine sight to see

At the end of all

It still us standing tall...

So when that sky rolls up

and the sea drains away

And the stars have faded dim

I'll be there

My shoulders strong and square

for the Goddess with the

Golden Hair.

49. PURIFIED

POEM

Thrown and Hurled

Across the stinging sea

The salt dried and burnt

My tongue like the hot desert sand.

Athena,

You are like the rain -

The thunder of the breaking storm

Signals your arrival,

Sending the crows flapping.

Rain down My Goddess!

I am a wrecked traveller

On a barren isle

Searching for your shadow.

I see the sheets of heavens rain

In the distance,

Cloaking the mountains.

Soon it will river

And come to my cup.

So I built my den

A stranded man alone.

Your bounty and providence

Has sustained me without question.

56. GROOMS - PROEM

Great Goddess Athena,

Take our hearts and minds,

In your cogent hands so fine,

And make them to what you wish this time.

Make us on your potter's wheel,

And weave us on your loom,

Beat us on your anvil,

Into a somehow worthy 'groom'.

Make us as those elite few,

To drive your chariot for you,

Worthy in status as heroic men,

Into conflict and safely back again.

I pray that those that hear this prayer

Will not look back and seek to dare,

To take the hand of the Greatest Maiden

And return from conquest, heavily laden!

Friend and Master

Humble before you

I place my brow on the floor

And to demonstrate how these things are done.

Guide us in our endeavours

To prepare for the week ahead

To bring value into our days

And the days of others.

We hold the peplos hem,

Sacred Lady of Athens,

Daughter of Zeus,

Come with us, Athena,

On our missions through these times,

Be our friend Athena,

Sing with us our shimmering rhymes.

'Third Day Blessings', And offerings for you,

Incense wispily burning, And prayers we humbly do.

63. I WAS THERE

A POEM  (Goddess First Person Style)

When you cried for me

And I didn't arrive

When you reached for me

And I wasn't there

Know that I was with you

Through storms and fair

When the salt bit your skin

And the sea foam lashed like a whip

When you'd lost everyone

And there was no sign of the ship

I was there unseen

In the hours that were darkest and most mean.

Your eyes were sore

And your vision was amok

You didn't see what you were gripping

Beneath the huge bubbled weed green smock

The plank that bore you safe onto land

Was none other than my goddess hand.

And when you went from isle to isle

I was with you all of that while

Hidden beneath that cloak of weed

Waiting to help you with your every need.

When you hoisted upwards onto rocks

And was entertained in the royal halls

I was there on Ithacan palace walls

For that time I admit I was not within plain sight

I made safe your home and upheld its might.

64. DARE

A POEM

I pour the wine, I make my feast.

I pour my heart out, At her feet.

I ignite the scent, And make my prayer.

She's the Maiden,  Of the heroic dare.

65. GOLDEN HAIRED GODDESS

A POEM

With dreams I see you,

You are there,

Hair like spun gold,

Un-aging beauty,

That never grows old.

Singing Spear,

In your hand,

Hiding Helm,

Upon your cascading brow,

Dressed in Whiteness,

Like moon bright glow,

Approaching silent,

Like some mother,

Careful not to wake,

Towards me. Me?

But I awake, my heart has leaped,

Like a darting bird,

Moon Treading,

Light Footed Goddess,

Standing by me,

Smiling down,

Your words are teasing,

I grin with stun,

Shining eyes

And a word of fun.

Yes Athena.

The answer is YES.

[Where is the missing number 66? It has gone for rework!]

67. MY DAILY PRAYER

By O.G. Osborne © 2013

Hail to thee Great Athena,

Friend and Master,

Favourite daughter of Zeus,

Agistratos, Promachos, Nike.

May the blessings

Of all heaven and earth

Be at thy feet.

May Victory forever

Be in thy Right hand

May happiness

Be thy handmaiden.

May the stars

Shine for you

And the planets

Turn for you

And all good beings

Adore you

And worship you like breath!

68. THE STORM GLASS

By Odysseus G. Osborne © 2013

I will be yours, Athena

If you will be mine,

Like a Storm Glass and Flame

We could combine.

Empowered with Oil,

Ensconced with Gold,

A Bright Mighty Lantern

For the world to behold.

69. WISE MAN

© 2013 Odysseus G. Osborne

Lifted,

From the clay bed and infused.

Evolved,

Through times that abused.

Arrival,

As the name decreed.

Wise Man.

Where do you wish to go?

The pathway is clear yet.

Those people take you to dark places.

These great city walls I gave to you

Smooth cogs of politics

All planned and oiled

Your tools are with you.

Your destination I say,

Is that of the wise man.

I named you at birth.

Wise man.

Why tarry thee in dark places?

70. SHIELD GODDESS

By O.G. Osborne © 2013

Hail to thee

Great Athena.

Promachos, Parthenos,

Agistratos, Nike.

Extend your hand

Great Teacher.

Guide our swords

And guide our minds.

We train to dance

The dance of defence,

To honour you,

Friend and Master.

Wrap your cloak about us,

Keep us secure within

Shielded by the mighty wall

A wall of wood and bronze and hair.

Teach us your dance of fire,

Piercing light gripped in our hands [1],

Panoply gilt apotrepein with might [2]

To guard from evil and invoke fright.

We welcome you glorious teacher!

Our fighting circle salutes you! [3]

[1] reference to the hoplite shortsword that is shaped like an olive leaf, the xiphos, which means approximately "piercing light".

[2] fixed with might refers to the ornamentation of the Medusan head, a device for warding off evil.

Worn by Goddess Athena either on her shield or on her mantle, the symbol found its way onto the breastplates of kings and great warlords.

[3] refers to the Athena Tyr sword combat club.

71. BECOMING

By O.G. Osborne © 2013

[Spartan Salute]

Hail Athena, Goddess.

[Deep Bow]

Hail Athena,

Glorious Princess of Heaven!

Favorite Daughter of Zeus!

Favorite Offspring of Zeus above all other offspring!

Agistratos, Promachos, Parthenos, Nike.

[Arms raised]

Begone to the profane! Begone to the miasma!

Only those that love wisdom abide.

Let us take shelter, O' Goddess,

Behind the wall of wood,

That is your shield,

Close to you.

A Sacred Space

Of Sacred Spaces,

Inviolate and Pure,

Never to be breached.

For the madness of this world

Is like a sea about a sun bleached rock,

Eroding and staining all it touches

With its stinging foam.

You lift your people high,

And protect them on lofty places,

And the most precious,

Like a babe you mother them.

Guide us on the way,

The trail of your choice,

To the destiny of your determine,

That we may become

What you wish us to be.

[Arms to side]

[Deep Bow]

[Spartan Salute]

72. DAUGHTERS OF RIGHTEOUS WAR

By O.G. Osborne © 2013

(A goddess first person style poem)

Daughters of Righteous War,

Let me shield you with my shield,

Let me guide your spear hand,

As it aims bold and true.

You are like me.

We are the Warlike Women,

Who defend our sacred spaces,

Hidden with helms, our faces.

We are strong!

And we have beauty both,

Together, tearing at the hearts of men!

Like a two edged xiphos,

Our eyes as piercing light.

Give your battle prayers to me,

Warrior Woman, Amazon!

I will shape it into a spear,

And drive it like lightning,

Into your enemy's throat.

73. ATHENA, THE CLOSEST

By O.G. Osborne © 2013

[Spartan Salute]

Great Athena,

I bow before your sacred image.

[Deep Bow]

[Arms Raised]

Glorious Goddess

Favourite Daughter of Zeus,

Be Blessed.

Closer than a whispered breath,

You visit my humble home,

With gentle feet you move around,

Casting blessings, the peace unbound.

Unseen Goddess!

Sometimes I hear the rustle of your gown

Or feel your aura close.

Or sense your warming radiant glow,

'Tis this that lets me know.

That though unseen except in dreams

Where my hopes are formed in mind

That in this world it's also true

You visit those of kind.

Unseen Queen of this humble home,

Athena, Goddess, Fair.

Be blessed with happiness in return

For all your loyal care.

[Arms Down]

[Deep Bow]

[Spartan Salute]

74. WHISPER WAYS

By O.G. Osborne © 2013

To me my friend.

Unseen Queen

Your wisdoms lend.

There are pacts it seems,

Between Gods and Men,

To combat Lions

And seal their dens.

I whisper words,

Good will returned,

For all the fine things

I have learned.

75. WAR PACT

By O.G. Osborne © 2013

(A Goddess First Person Style Poem)

Amazons! Banners unfurl!

Blades a-whirl.

Fight for the right.

Fight for the good.

Amazons!

I claim you all,

As daughters of mine.

Hail me at the crucial time.

I will guide your shining spear,

And keep you close my dear.

Amazons!

I hold you all

At valour's heart

Hail me with a sounding rhyme

I will set the foe to flight,

And keep our shields stern and tight.

Amazons!

Shine for me like blazing stars,

Your lances tall and hearts like drums,

Valorous maidens with swirling swords

Heroic deed shall be your fate,

And stars for you I will create!

76. TURNING THE DAY

By O.G. Osborne © 2014

What is there

In Mundane Grip

Of a humdrum world…

A place of peasants

Where the shadows hide

Concealed beyond heroic sight.

What is there that saves the day?

Where is the shining shield,

The sharpened spear

And the plumed helm

With eyes like lions

Drilling and severing aside the deep dark.

Sometimes I wonder of those olden days

When, Athena, you took the hands of heroes

And tears swell a little.

I am no hero, and not worthy of taking your hand.

But I will follow you Goddess,

For where you go, goes the Hero and the Heroine.

I am in the best of company.

What saves the day from the timeless haze?

One look at you changes the day.

I will contemplate you Athena,

And watch with wonder.

77. BRINGER OF BLISS

By O.G. Osborne © 2014

Wishing you

The buzz of bee wings

The kaleidoscopic colours

Of butterflies dance,

I send the scent

Of jasmine and juniper

On the wind as gentle bird wings.

Peace you gave us,

Beautiful and calm.

Secure you keep us

From shadowed harm.

Great Athena,

Friend and Master,

Let us always be this way.

Thank you Gods of Heaven

And Gods of Earth,

For the sunlit bright blue sky,

Like a lantern of shining hope in a halo of holy azure.

The solid ground beneath us,

As a foundation of eternal logic,

Broad brown and immovable except by Gaea's own will,

Set with little gems [thoughts] of wonder.

For the past, thank you.

For the future, thank you.

For the present, thank you.

78. THE HEROIC MUNDANE

By O.G. Osborne © 2014

Athena, Friend, Master.

Guide us this day,

As you did the heroes of old.

For some of us are indeed

Brave and Bold.

But those too that struggle

In mundane ways are heroic too

Their minds and patience

Bruised black and blue.

Please bless us!

79. SOUL SONG

By O.G. Osborne © 2014

The Voice that shakes the world

Is mine and mine alone.

The Spear vibrates in my grasp

Hence all things submit to my will.

My keening song

Pierces all things.

From the broad face of vastness high

To the rocks beneath Zeus' sacred sky.

My soft breath within your breast

Drives even iron to blush,

Like leaves dancing in spiral throngs

All things move to my keening songs.

80. THRICE VEILED

By O.G.Osborne © 2016

Shining

She.

A Star within,

The velvet robes [of Heaven]

Of the Mighty Mind [of Zeus]

Shining

She.

Mailled Maiden,

Sapphire Eyed,

Thrice Robed,

Bronze veiled in victory.

Valour – Vigilance – Virtue.

81. ATHENA HEPHAESTIA

By O.G.Osborne © 2017

Red Fire,

In thy blood,

Yet restrained,

So controlled...

By steeled will.

Vast elemental power,

Impetuousness,

Directed with thine potent mind,

Forming patterns,

Creating, Shaping.

Your mighty breath,

Feeds furious flames.

Your bright spark ignites,

And sustains.

And there anew,

With symmetry grew,

The sum greater than...

Those parts alone.

Proem 82: A Third Day Proem for Goddess Athena.

By O.G.Osborne

If I had wings,

I would fly for thee.

If I had might,

I would fight for thee.

If Arete nestled in my soul,

I'd be most excellent for thee.

But I have none. I have no gifts of worth.

I have a heart. And a voice.

Here, Great Athena, is a poem.

My humble poem.

03/02/2018

Poetry for me isn't the thing in itself. It is a mere key to unlock the doorway into an enchanted space. One cannot look at the poem and say that it is the result. It is merely the beginning of something beyond the poem.

Poem 83 Third Day Poem

By O.G.Osborne

Dance Goddess,

With a crown of flowers

About your shining helm.

Let the world

And all those within

See you in majesty.

Golden hair flowing

Like emblazoned rays of the sun,

Red like reflecting bronze,

Like the spears of heroes.

Dark like the sacred space

Rich like rippled silk

Between the stars.

Your dance O’ goddess,

Is strength and healing

To those that adore you.

Poem 84:  Golden Gift

By O.G.Osborne

This Shining Heart,

Here in Holy Hands;

Not seized, Nor found,

Gifted and Glowing.

What shall I do with this?

Shall I remake you, once more?

Or shall I hand you,

As Zagreus to The Father?

I shall place this shimmered soul,

Within my Shadowed Aegis,

There, in this Sacred Crib,

Your hopes are hallowed.

(October 7th 2018)

Poem 85 : You Didn't Tell Us

By O.G.Osborne

High-Minds-Theorise, Great Athena,

Ascribe you a Goddess, Most Cogent and Wise,

They call you Mindful-Maiden,

And to them there was an unexpected surprise…

Strong-Hands-Gesture, Great Athena,

With Salutes of Honour, Most Noble and True,

Call you Gallant-Valiant,

And again, another surprise was well overdue…

Our minds call you glory, Xanthi-shine, (1)

Across the world – so far and wide.

There’s something else, something fine,

That your people are hiding deep inside.

Epithets, Etiquettes, all given in lieu,

For what your people secretly want to say to you…

Our hearts they glance with a different eye,

With a word as honey; both sweet and shy...

We call you Mother, Mother, Mother thrice!

We cry this word inside like loaded dice,

Mother Athena, Mother Mighty and True,

Our hearts see the Mother-fire inside you!

You didn’t tell us, that this was your thing,

Making warriors dance, poets strum and sing.

You didn’t tell us, that this was your plan,

To rebuild and guide the broken down man!

Our owl minds now soaring...

Higher than eagles, Higher than stars,

Our hearts go – pouring,

Butterfly dreams just released from jars…

You didn’t tell us, that this was your thing,

That your smile would be our desire in every thing.

From my deepest mind the deepest soul,

Let our eyes shine together harmonic in goal…

Let’s go revel in this dream of dreams,

Lit by your eyes, so fully a-gleam (2)

I’ll find my way it seems, as there’s now always a way

That seems to be your theme for us each and every day...

Mother, Mother Athenaaaa! Mother Athenaaaa!

(Written 2023)

1 – Xanthi, Xanthe, refers to Goddess Athena’s hair, golden like grain.

2 – Glaukopis, Epithet of Athena, “Shining or Owl Eyed"

----3 PERSONAL MISC POEMS------

1. POEM FRUIT

A Poem of Love

Poem for Womankind, Priestess Daughters of the Goddess

The Goddess planted me

She walked in the gardens

And ate the poem-fruit

Hanging from my boughs

I am the tree

And the Goddess has not come

And walked here recently

But my poems heavily weigh down

And there they wait with stormy frown

Scrump these poem-fruits away

Lady of this goddess day

Lady of the Mountain left them for you,

To steal away to fertile earth

And devour them for all your worth!

2. PAINT WITH A POEM

A Poem of Odysseus

I will paint you with my poem, my beloved

Timeless with ink, with scarlet's, rose crown.

In a time far gone not remembered

With an Island, a palace and town.

I will paint you with my poem, my beloved

In the world where we were both free

On a realm now lost on the high waves

Under grey eyes great olive tree!

Our bed was a tree my beloved

We spent hours and days there entwined

In a haze of love and sweet words

Kissed with dreams of a song birds mind

I will paint you with my poem, my beloved

In the world that was blessed by High Zeus,

You were my Queen my beloved

And I was wise Odysseus...

(Inspired by The White Birds)

3. THE CHOICE

A salute to the bravery of the human soul

The autumn leaves

Blow over me wet and dying,

And the gusts

Of the dark days are aiming true

Like walls of shiver,

A leaf blows into my hand of blue,

Contemplation begins of the chance

Of the golden swirling dead leaves dance.

'As is the life

Of the leaves,

So is the life of men' it said.

'I was once young and green

And now I'm gold and dead.

As the old leaves faint away

Already comes the new,

The gods they made us

They made it this way,

We cannot change it

Whatever we do.'

So as I stare at this baleful truth

And the clouds of winter

Gathering above with cruel aloof,

Contemplation begins of the chance

Of the golden swirling dead leaves dance.

'As Priam called to fair Helen,' the dead leaf said

'Come dear child,

Come sit by me,

And look upon him

Who was your husband,

Upon your kin and friends,

I cannot blame you,

It was the gods who caused it,

And brought war and tears upon us.'

'Gods gave me a message' it said

'To tell you before I fly,

Before I'm blown by winter winds

Into this pale grey sky.'

'Like Achilles who made his choice,

'A long life of humility

Or one that's short and shining'

Glorious and free.'

'It was his knowledge

Of the looming doom that faced him either way

In that his wisdom and his heart,

His choice he did display.'

'His Greek Heart proclaimed 'Glory!'

And Helens Heart laughed 'Love!'

Beauty is the way of the gods, And beauty is from above.

'They both knew they had one chance

To make their gallant choice.

Like heroes they didn't whisper it

It was hailed with heroes' voice!'

And with the dead leaf

By the stalk,

I thanked the leaf

For it's wise talk.

I threw it high

Into the gale,

To watch it blow

To another tale.
