Abstract:

From 2014 to 2016, ten wells were drilled in the Beetaloo Sub-basin of the McArthur Basin, Northern Territory, Australia, targeting organic-rich shales of the Kyalla and Velkerri Formations. Of the ten wells, two were fully cored, and the other eight were conventional wells evaluated with extensive logging programs including neutron-induced gamma ray spectroscopy, magnetic resonance, borehole images, and advanced full waveform sonic measurements, supported by core. This phase of exploration in the Beetaloo was halted with the 2016 moratorium on hydraulic fracturing operations in onshore unconventional reservoirs in the Northern Territory, but since the moratorium was lifted in 2018 an additional six wells have been drilled, confirming the ongoing interest in this resource.

Wells from the 2014 to 2016 drilling campaigns have recently been re-evaluated using a set of integrated workflows for reservoir and completion quality and taking advantage of some of the most recent developments in shale evaluation. This presentation will review the evaluation methodologies and place the results of these evaluations in a regional context. The availability of a consistent suite of analyses across the basin allows identifying regional trends in maturity, fluid type, fluid properties, and reservoir and completion quality and provides a framework for optimising future exploration and development activities.

About the Presenter:
