Based on large-scale register data, linked with survey data, this project investigates from a life course perspective how gender inequality within couples unfolds over time. The data allow us to study the impact of where people live and work on which types of partners they choose.

Subsequently, we study the implications of ‘modern relationships’ in which the woman is more educated and/or earns more than the man on family-related and work-related decisions. FAMREG is funded by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF). It is carried out by an interdisciplinary team in cooperation of the Departments of Sociology and Demography of the University of Vienna, Umeå University in Sweden, and the Institute for Advanced Studies.
