About me

I am an Associate Professor in Energy Harvesting and Power Management at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Exeter. After receiving BEng in Information and Control Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, in 2004, I joined the University of Southampton where I was awarded MSc in RF Communication Systems in 2005 and PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2009, respectively. My PhD topic was "Methods of frequency tuning vibration-based micro-generators". After finishing my PhD, I had worked as a Research Fellow and later a Senior Research Fellow in Electronics and Electrical Engineering Group in the University of Southampton for over six years. I then worked at Coventry University as a Lecturer in Electronic Engineering for a year before joining the University of Exeter in September 2016 as a Lecturer and later a Senior Lecturer. I was the acting Education Lead of Electronic Engineering at Exeter in 2019-2020. Since January 2022, I joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China as an Associate Professor.

My research interests include energy harvesting from various sources, e.g. vibration, sound, wind, human movement, solar, RF, wireless power transfer etc and their applications as well as advanced materials for energy harvesting applications. I have been working on two EU FP7 projects, two EPSRC projects, four Innovate UK (previously known as TSB) projects and several industry funded consultancy projects since 2009. Systems and devices I developed have been used in practical applications such as wind powered artwork in the Ropemaker Building in London and self-powered vibration sensors on Red Funnel ferries. I have over 90 publications and 7 invited talks and 1 keynote speech. The total citation is over 2600 times and my H-factor is 24 (see my Google Scholar page). I have also served as reviewers for various prestigious international journals and conferences as well as Royal Society Industry Fellowships. I was General Chair of PowerMEMS 2021. I was a Guest Editor of a Special Issue (Vibration Energy Harvesting: Linear, Nonlinear, and Rotational Approaches) in Shock and Vibration. I'm currently an Associate Editor of IEEE Open Journal of Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control and a Guest Editor of the Special Issue "Advanced Energy Harvesting Technologies" in MDPI Energies (ISSN 1996-1073).
