What is Battle of the Books?

  • It is a trivia competition on 10 books.

  • Our final team will consist of 5 players and 5 alternates. One of these students will be our official Speaker to give answers.

  • Meetings will be on Thursdays starting in December at 7:15-7:45 in the library.

  • We will compete in a regional competition. Teams who win this round will advance to the finals.

Want to Join?

  • To come to our first practice on Thursday, December 2, you must have read at least 3 BOB books and have your permission slip signed and returned to Mrs. Dobyne.

  • By January 6, you will need to have read 6 BOB books.

  • Our final team will consist of 10 students who have read EVERY book. This final team will be decided by the end of January. The decision will be based on points earned. Students can earn points by attending practice, scoring well on written tests, and knowing the authors' names.

  • Those that make the final team will be expected to finish all 10 books by the end of February. We will continue to practice to prepare for our spring competitions.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. Do I have to read all of the books? No, but the final team typically is made up of students who have read all of the books (sometimes more than once.)

  2. Can I read these books even if I don't want to do the competition? Yes, after the competition is over, Mrs. Dobyne will let all other students start checking out from the Battle of the Books cart. (around the middle of March)

  3. How is the final team chosen? Students will begin earning points in December by participating in practices, taking quizzes on Google Forms that are put on our Google Classroom, knowledge of the books and authors, good sportsmanship, and a commitment to the team. The students who have earned the most points will be on the final 10.

  4. Will I have to stay after school? Yes, just one or two days. The regional and final competitions in March will be after school. Last year, we competed virtually, but I'm not sure how we will compete this year.
