BORNEO 18

2017 FALL Prof: Hugh CLARKE

The aim of this project was to investigate the structural system and design of the Borneo 18 house, through psychical models and hand drawn plans and sections. Designed by MVRDV in 1999, Borneo 18 is a house located in Amsterdam and has 200m² of floor area.

Despite the limited floor area, the plan has four floors as well as giving each floor higher volumes than usual. By sliding out one of the floors at the rear facing the water, a special spacious long cross-section is created with two closed elements, which are a garage/storage space as well as a bathroom and bedroom block on the second floor. The remaining irregular space contains the kitchen-diner, sitting room and study, all spatially connected to one another.
