Lab Orientation and Training
Training
In the lab, in SEAS and at the University we care deeply about creating a safe, respectful and inclusive environment.
For those working in the lab:
Signs on the lab doors indicate safety equipment and regulations. The Blue Binder on the shelf across from our fume hood contains the Material Safety Data Sheets (MDSs) for all chemicals in the lab as well as printed Standard Operated Protocols (SOPs) . The U-M Standard Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) can be found here. Please ASK if you have safety concerns, are unsure about whether something is safe or don't completely understand a procedure.
Please log in to University of Michigan Environmental Health and Safety and complete the following safety training modules:
RESPONSIBLE CONDUCT OF RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP (RCRS) TRAINING (approximately 2.5 hours)
EHS_BLS025W_TAB CHEMICAL LABORATORY SAFETY (approximately 1.5 hours)
EHS_BLS_COVIDW COVID 19: WORKING SAFELY IN U-M RESEARCH LABS (45 min)
Those working with live fishes in the field and/or lab need to take the following animal care courses in eRAM/ULAM:
ULAM-C10000 Orientation to Animal Care/Use at UofM and for Field Research
ULAM-C10400 Introduction to the Laboratory Fish
ULAM-C12500 Introduction to Wildlife
EHS requires all individuals listed on an IACUC animal use protocol to be enrolled in the Medical Surveillance Program.
Those working in the field and GSIs for courses with field components are required to take CPR/First Aid Training - Red Cross courses can be found here.
I require that employees take the university's online training in how you can help prevent sexual violence: Haven for Faculty and Staff (approximately 1.5 hours).
Additionally, I recommended Training to Prevent Workplace Retaliation (about 25 minutes).
