In this talk, you will learn about common difficulties related to emotion management and expression seen in people who have autism and related conditions. Research on causes of emotional problems will be shared, and attendees will learn about strategies to help. We will also describe the EASE+UP program for autistic youth and adults who struggle with emotional dysregulation. This talk is appropriate for clinicians and educators, as well as parents and caregivers of autistic children, adolescents, and young adults.
About the speaker: Dr. Susan White is a clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of people with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism. At the University of Alabama, she is Professor and Doddridge Saxon Chair in Clinical Psychology, the Director of the Center for Youth Development and Intervention (CYDI), and also the Associate Dean for Research in the Barefield College of Arts & Sciences. Her research, which has been continuously funded for over 20 years, spans multiple areas in developmental psychopathology, with a primary focus on mechanism-driven intervention for co-occurring and core problems in autism. In addition to authoring over 200 books, chapters, and research articles, Dr. White has worked as a clinician in private practice and in residential inpatient settings, cementing her belief in the importance of research and evidence-based practice being mutually informative.

In celebration of Read Across America Week, this is a one- hour caregiver and parent-focused webinar designed to help families nurture a love of reading in young children—without pressure or perfection.
During this interactive session, we’ll explore:
How everyday moments like bedtime routines, car rides, and quiet snuggles can become powerful opportunities for building early literacy skills.
Simple, realistic strategies to support language development, comprehension, and engagement with books—no special training required.
Meeting children where they are, making reading enjoyable, and turning shared stories into meaningful connections.
The webinar includes a 15-minute live Q&A, giving parents the chance to ask questions, share experiences, and leave feeling encouraged and confident in their role as their child’s first and most important reading partner.
Perfect for families with young children and caregivers looking for practical ideas during Read Across America Week and beyond.
