Course Description: This course will help students learn problem solving. We will be exploring the different applications used to solve everyday math problems along with complex equations.

7th Grade Math Objectives – Throughout the course, students will meet the following goals:

· Apply mathematical reasoning skills and statistical analysis to solve real-world problems.

· Effectively translate between graphic, numeric, symbolic, and verbal representations.

· Learn to select and use appropriate mathematical knowledge when investigating problems.

· Apply proportional reasoning, utilizing multiplication and division to solve problems with ratios, rates, and scale factors.

· Develop a probability model comparing and contrasting theoretical and experimental probabilities.

· Demonstrate and understanding of the meanings and uses for variables in mathematical problems.

· Work with two- and three-dimensional figures to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

8th Grade Math Objectives – Throughout the course, students will meet the following goals:

· Effectively translate between graphic, numeric, symbolic, and verbal representation.

· Learn to select and use appropriate mathematical knowledge when investigation problems.

· Demonstrate an understanding of functions and use functions to represent quantitative relationships.

· Use linear equations and system of linear equations to represent, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

· Analyze two- and three-dimensional figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence.

· Develop and apply foundational mathematical skills such as the application of rational and irrational numbers.

Math I Objectives – Throughout the course, students will meet the following goals:

· Analyze and interpret the structure of expressions and write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems.

· Communicate effectively using graphic, numeric, symbolic, and verbal representations.

· Recognize the graph of given data as being linear, quadratic, or exponential.

· Solve equations and inequalities in one variable and represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically.

· Create and solve equations that describe numbers or relationships.

· Model and solve problems with linear systems graphically.

Math II Objectives – Throughout the course, students will meet the following goals:

· Demonstrate an understanding of functions and use functions to describe quantitative relationships.

· Communicate effectively using graphic, numeric symbolic, and verbal representations.

· Students will solve geometric problems relating to triangles, circles, and solids.

· Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between real and non-real numbers.

· Study the theory and application of probability.

· Solve and graph quadratic expressions and functions.

Math III Objectives – Throughout the course, students will meet the following goals:

· Demonstrate an understanding of polynomial, rational, radical, and trigonometric functions.

· Communicate effectively using graphic, numeric, symbolic, and verbal representations.

· Apply various functions learned to real world application.

· Understand and apply the Laws of Sines and Cosines to problems.

· Solve and graph quadratic expressions and functions.

Software: We will be using Khan Academy for instruction and assessment. I do this so each student can learn at their own pace. No student will be held back because of waiting on other students, and no student will be left behind. I also use this software to give me a greater opportunity to work with students 1 on 1. Their education is catered to the individual student.

Class Expectations and Rules:

· No cell phones in class. They are a huge distraction and are not needed for this class.

· Show respect for the teacher, other students, yourself, and the classroom.

· Come prepared to class. This includes a notebook, a writing utensil, and laptop.

· Be in the classroom and login in when the tardy bell rings.

· Stay on task.

Grading: Every school day, students are expected to work at least 40 minutes in Khan Academy. This is considered their classwork grade and they have ample time in class to finish the work. When students feel they are ready and understand the material, they can take the quiz/test depending on where they are in the unit. Students can learn at their own pace and don’t need to worry about falling behind. The only homework given will be when students are off task or they miss a day. Grades will be based on the following percentage levels as per the current district grading policy.

A 93% B- 80% D+ 67%

A- 90% C+ 77% D 63%

B+ 87% C 73% D- 60%

B 83% C- 70% F Below 60?

What Makes Up A Grade?

Classwork – 40%

Assessment (Quizzes and Tests) – 60%

Attendance: Attendance is very important, but as these math classes are technology based and online, students can complete their classwork even when they miss a day. Students can access their lessons anytime 24/7 by going to khanacademy.org.
