What can I do right now to make sure my child is signed up for 5th grade band?
Turn in your Storm Lake Elementary 5th Grade Band Information and Permission Form to your 4th grade classroom teacher or Ms. Loving in music class. This allows us to put band on your child's schedule in the Fall.
In August, students will be able to try mouthpieces to see if their favorite instruments from this spring are something they can make a sound on.
Students will receive their instrument certificate in the mail in August/September to confirm what instrument teachers are planning for them to play this year. Please do not purchase or rent an instrument before receiving their certificate!

How do I sign up for Band?
Turn your permission form in by April 18, 2024 to your classroom teacher or Ms. Loving.
Turn in a permission form when you return to school in August if you need the summer to think about it.

I am not sure about this… Could I start Band in 6th grade instead?
No. If you want to be a part of the band, you must start in 5th grade. It is very difficult to catch up on a year of learning. If you want to be part of the band, 5th grade is the time!

What if I can’t afford an instrument? How much does it cost?
MidBell Music Store has many options to get an instrument that are affordable for most families. The school can also help out sometimes. Most activities (even classes!) involve some sort of cost. If you want to be part of the band, we will find a way to make it happen for you!
Generally, instruments cost anywhere from $30-$80 a month. It all depends on the type of instrument you choose, old or new, and if your family chooses to rent or buy.

Can I switch my instrument later?
You can audition for saxophone or horn later in the school year. Not all students will be chosen to switch. After these auditions, the instrument you choose will probably be the one you stick with. We have opportunities in 7th/8th grade jazz band where you can learn an additional instrument.

What if I try it, and don’t like it?
5th grade band is a year long commitment. Students are expected to participate through the end of the school year. Some of the best and most fun experiences in band come towards the end of the year, so you’ll want to experience the entire year of band. You have the most fun in band when you put in your best efforts to learn to play your instrument. Only then can you make a good decision if band is right for you as a 6th grader and beyond.
