About

WORKSPACE GALLERY

Founded in 2008, Workspace Gallery is a venue in Lincoln, Nebraska dedicated to exhibiting contemporary photography. Our mission is to showcase work by emerging and renowned artists who have not exhibited in the area in order to bring them to the attention of our community and region. Workspace Gallery hosts six exhibitions annually.

HISTORY AND LOCATION

Lincoln, Nebraska was founded on the past, present, and future homelands of the Pawnee and Oto-Missouria Peoples. We acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional and ongoing owners and custodians of this place we now call home.

Built in 1910, the Sawmill Building is an adaptive re-use of a historic lumber mill and cabinetry shop into gallery, office, and restaurant spaces. In the ecologically-minded renovation, several existing elements from the previous lives of the building were retained to create a dynamic historic/modern character to the LEED certified building. Designed by BVH Architecture and developed and inspired by WRK LLC, the Sawmill Building is located in Lincoln’s historic Haymarket District in an urban setting among other galleries, restaurants, shops, and businesses adjacent to both University of Nebraska-Lincoln and downtown. The gallery space includes 75 linear feet of exhibition space with track lighting.

CURATORS

Exhibitions are curated by Larry Gawel, Professor of Photography at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, and Dana Fritz, Professor of Art at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. They select exhibitions by viewing work at portfolio reviews at the Society for Photographic Education regional and national conferences, as well as other portfolio review events such as the Filter Photo Festival in Chicago, and PhotoNOLA in New Orleans. Unsolicited submissions are not accepted.

FOUNDATION SUPPORT

Support for gallery maintenance, announcements, receptions, and shipping are provided by the Porter Foundation.

EXHIBITION SCHEDULE

Workspace Gallery hosts six photography exhibitions each year and schedules receptions during Lincoln’s First Friday Artwalks.

SALES AND SECURITY

The Sawmill Building and Workspace Gallery are open Monday–Friday 8:00-5:30 and during Friday evening receptions. The space may also be opened by appointment. The exhibited work may be for sale, but there is no sales staff. Sale inquiries will be directed to the exhibiting artist and work will be available at the close of the exhibition. While there is no commission taken on sales, artists are encouraged to donate 20% of any sales back to the Porter Foundation to ensure support for future exhibitions. The work will be fully insured for damage or theft from its arrival to the Sawmill Building until its return to the artist.
