Openings

Two fully-funded Ph.D. student positions (competitive stipend plus tuition coverage) are available in Fall 2023 in the research group of Dr. Wei Zhang of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio.

Areas of active research funded by the National Science Foundation and other agencies include:

1) Wind impact on buildings in wind storms (e.g., hurricanes and tornado winds),

2) Bio-inspired flow control strategy for wind resilience and energy efficiency, and

3) wind turbine wake modeling and land-atmospheric interaction.

We primarily use laser-based thermal/fluid measurement techniques (e.g., Particle image velocimetry or PIV) to quantify the turbulent flow structures and fluid-structure interaction in laboratory settings or field. We also closely collaborate with numerical modelers to achieve Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) validation-quality data sets and develop feasible analytical/numerical models for various engineering applications.

We welcome self-motivated and talented students with

1) strong background in thermal/fluids/energy area (required);

2) research experience using PIV/PTV, high-speed photography, and other imaging-based measurement techniques (preferred);

3) research experience using Matlab, Tecplot and other data analysis/visualization tools (preferred);

4) Excellent communication skills in writing and oral presentation in english (preferred).

If you are interested in joining our group, please send the following:

1) a brief statement of your academic background and research interests, your career goal and

2) your C.V. (including the list of publications/presentations) to Dr. Wei Zhang at w.zhang13@csuohio.edu
