McIntosh MC50 Restore

Pair of Mac MC50 sent in for a full restoration of capacitor replacement.

The mono blocks are rated at 50w RMS. These are solid state amps.

The pix below will show the original underneath of the chassis before any work was done on the amps.

The power supply if you look at the schematic has 2 big caps mounted on top which each being 4000uf/50v and then another can cap below the chassis which is 2x80uf/200v and a 50uf and 150uf/200v. Both 4000uf/50v can caps tested ok as far as voltages were and the owner was mainly wanting to replace some of the older caps on the boards and the big 4 section filter , as so thebig caps  were left as is. It would be very difficult to find any caps in that size to mount. I would find some from suppliers like Mouser, Digikey etc in the radial or snap mount and see if the spacing would be the same as the originals and make up some /etch some pc boards to solder then to and mount the boards below chassis.

So to replace the 4 section can cap I used a 6 section terminal board and mounted 2 82uf/200v caps, 50uf/150 and 150uf/50v. The wires from the old can cap are long enough to connect to each cap. Run a common ground from each neg of each cap and run to the common ground terminal. The resistors between each section in this amp are mounted on the lower circuit board and were carbon comp, and I replaced everyone as they were all out of tolerance. These were replaced with metal oxide. The 470uf/50 on the board was also replaced.

The 2 other boards the electrolytic caps , 470uf/10v and 2 470uf/50v were also replaced. I also replaced 4 older diodes with 1N4007 1A and a .02 cap to ground as shown in the pix above. This amp now should be safe to run for years.
