Hi, like some other amateur radio operators I started on cbradio. It wasn't until recently that I was granted my ham certificate. It all started when my second wife and I were planning a trip in 1998 to sail around the world. I thought it would be a great idea to get a ham licence and out fit our yacht with a radio, I didn't have any guidance as to were to start. I didn't know any operators to as how one go about getting licence.So we ended up purchasing a receiver that was to be used for getting the time signal for navigation by sexton; this receiver had ssb on it and soon discovered the ham bands after listening for a few years. We were in Africa where there was a course starting up; I purchased some CW tapes. The time line for the course did not work out; so I listened to the tapes as we were sailing across the south Atlantic. It soon went by the way side as I didn't have guidance as to how to take it all in. It wasn't until we returned home that I met a ham radio operator and told him my story about not making it past the C W. He said that you no longer needed the code; this was on a Monday. He lent me a basic study book I went home and read it and got a hold of a local examiner and wrote the following Friday Jan 2006, passed, the learning then began two years later had to do my advanced. I was first licensed in December 1982 and upgraded to advanced in May 1987.

Operated cw on HF for the first two years. Favorite bands were 15M and 40M.

Been involved in the club since 1988.

Chaired the meetings from October 1992 on. Recorded the minutes of the meetings from April 1994 on for the most part. Also gave the treasurer's report many times since 1994.

Presently secretary of the Norfolk Amateur Radio Club.
