Spreydon/Heathcote Community Board, Christchurch 2021
Would you actively pursue policies that would enable utility cycling to
develop along the lines that have made it the transportation mode of
choice
for so many in Copenhagen?
Ans : Yes I would because personally I have been riding bikes to work and
around town since I was a young adult. Also I believe that in terms of
getting more people active cycling is probably the best because one can get
to work cheaply and for the greater benefit of the planet while getting
exercise.
Would you lobby to rescind the law that compels cyclists to wear helmets
in order to make it discretionary on the rider?
Ans: Personally I have always worn a helmet since the law was passed and
never had a problem because it has protected me on a number of occasions eg
I have been knocked off my bike twice but I would need to understand better
the reasons why one would want to rescind the law in place for ones own
protection, still if it is discretionary on the rider, I would go with the
majority although where would it leave children etc.
Would you give preference to establishing a comprehensive network of
cycle lanes over retaining curbside parking for cars?
Ans: It is true that ChCh could have a better system of cycle lanes and that
this has been put on hold but to establish a comprehensive network of
cycle lanes over retaining curbside parking for cars is debatable because
ChCh does not have the number of cyclist unless one can prove the need then
we are left with the status quo.
Would you lobby to rescind the law which prohibits cyclists from using
pavements ( at least as an interim measure for the years it will otherwise
take to
establish real separation from motorized vehicles)
to enable 'slow' cyclists ( e.g.the elderly )to take up utility cycling.
Ans: I was not aware that there was such a law, in an ideal world yes but
the footpaths are too narrow and congested already.
Would you actively work to set up a campaign to educate the pubic about
and promote the types of bicycles and technologies appropriate to utility
cycling?
Ans: First of all I realise after reading your email and questions that I
need to educate myself and then I can support programmes, initiatives that
educate and promote cycling.
Would you lobby for the installation of bike racks on ALL public
transport vehicles ?
Ans: Yes I think thats a great idea especially for the likes of those
travelling from Lyttelton or outer lying areas.
Do you cycle yourself? - And if not at this stage in your life, what
would it take to get you to take up 'utility' cycling in the future ?
Ans: Most days I cycle except when it is icy, snow or heavy rain.
Would you recommend that other people (children/ the elderly) cycle?
Why? / Why not?
Ans: I would recommend cycling if there was a guarantee of safety for
children and the elderly or at least a very good education programme for
cycling.......
Thanks Tahu
