Authors' Guides

PRESENTATION

The manuscript must be carefully proofread using a spell checker. Papers written in foreign languages must be corrected by native speakers before submission.

Latin names of genera and species must be printed in italics.

The first mention of the name of an organism must be accompanied by its Latin name with the author's name (please do not abbreviate!) and the year of publication as follows:

Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758.

Subsequent references must omit the author's name and year, and abbreviate the genus name to one letter::

М. domestica.

If different genus names mentioned in the text begin with the same letter, they should be abbreviated to TWO or THREE letters..

The authors of genera, tribes, subfamilies, families and suprafamilial categories should be omitted (except in catalogues and monographs, where the nomenclature is occasionally concerned)..

The spelling of geographical names in papers written in English must follow Google Maps. It is recommended to use the terms "region" and "district" for "область" та район" accordingly. The preferred translation of «Лісостеп» is «Wood-and-Steppe», and that of «Полісся» is «Polissia (Forest Zone)».

Please refer to the source (comprehensive catalogues, monographs, internet databases), which are followed in the systematics and nomenclature of the mentioned taxa, e.g:

"Nomenclature of beetle taxa follows the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera (Löbl & Smetana, 2007)".

Source citations include the author's name and year without initials:

Spencer (1949 a, b), Johnson &  (2010), Balachowsky & Mesnil (1939)  or (Кришталь, 1959 а, 1974 а, б, в, г).
You can give also the reference to page or figure/plate number: Некрутенко (1990: 51; рис. 12; табл. 1, 3); Kotsch (1935: 12; Abb. 2).

Manuals, handbooks, books and pamphlets, the authors of which are not mentioned, are cited in the form of an abbreviated title (only the first word): (Catalogue..., 1980)..

New taxa

Descriptions of new taxa are accepted. They are immediately validated by the assignment of a DOI and registration in ZooBank, in accordance with the recommendations of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.

References

Only sources mentioned in the text should be included. References should be listed in their original spelling and in alphabetical order (Cyrillic letters first, then Roman letters). Works by the same author should be listed in chronological order. We use a simplified Harvard bibliographic format for references:

Illustrations

Figures should be mounted on plates no larger than 170x210 mm (600-1200 dpi black & white tif, 300-600 dpi colour jpg file). Please send them separately and do not insert them directly into a doc / docx file.

If the figures are to be mounted on plates, please send them as separate high-resolution images (1200 dpi black & white tif, 600 dpi colour jpg file): this way they will be included without loss of quality.

 Captions of figures

must be as follows:

Figs 1–6. Butterflies of the family Papilionidae in vicinity of Kiev: total view, dorsally (1, 3, 5) and ventrally (2, 4, 6): 1–2. Papilio machaon. 3–4: Zerynthia polyxena; 5–6. Parnassius mnemosyne.

If you know the localicty well, better give its geographical coordinates (e.g., after «Google Map») than mention its district, name of a farm or a locality, which is not included into any common modern maps. An old/incomplete label, which cannot be turned into coordinates, must be quoted in parentheses :

"Kaniv Nature Reserve, Zaricchia Is., 1947" (Kryshtal).
