Tips and tricks for users of phone Nokia E52 and Nokia E55

How to synchronize calendar and contacts with GMail

This answers a common question: how to sync Google contacts with Nokia E52 E55.

You can configure Nokia E52 E55 to synchronize e-mail, calendar and contacts with a Google / GMail account. The synchronization is done through so called "Mail for Exchange". This application is installed by default on every Nokia E52 E55 phone.

  1. Make sure you have the most recent version of "Mail for Exchange"
    • Run Nokia Suite or Nokia PC Suite on your PC, connect your phone to PC and search for software updates
  2. Open "Email" application - by default it is on the main main
  3. Select "New mailbox"
  4. Select "Mail for Exchange" as service provider
      • Do NOT select "GMail" - it will provide only e-mail synchronization, not calendar or contacts synchronization!
  5. Set following:
      • User name: me@gmail.com
      • Server: m.google.com
      • Domain: None (default)
      • Adv. mailbox settings -> Secure connection: Yes
      • Adv. mailbox settings -> Port: 443
      • Accept server certificate permanently on the first connection
  6. Customize synchronization settings:
      • Go to "Settings"
      • Select "Mail for Exchange" - configure e-mail synchronization
      • Select "Personal Inform. Manager" - configure calendar, contacts and task settings.
      • Make sure to disable task synchronization - it does not work!

Useful mobile apps

My personal selection of most useful applications for Nokia E52 E55.

  1. Fun Torch - simplest free torch app
  2. SCam free - best camera application
    • http://store.ovi.com/content/249918
      • SCam Free is a fast and easy to use camera application. Supports back and front camera and both portrait and landscape screen orientations. Captured images are zoomable, latest image can be viewed any time.
      • Much faster and more powerful that the default build in camera application.
      • Limitations of the "free" version:
        • default key assignment cannot be changed
        • at exit time shows a text message encouraging to buy pro version

Useful desktop apps

  1. For Windows - Nokia Suite
    • As of April 2013, this is the most recent software from Nokia to manage your E52 E55 phone
    • It has very good Ovi Maps manager
    • It is a bit heavy, but does not have to start with the OS, so acceptable
  2. For Windows - Nokia PC Suite
    • Old version of Nokia software to manage your E52 E55 phone
      • It is very clunky, every module needs to be separately downloaded from the net (i.e. software updates module, Ovi Maps etc)
    • Ovi Maps manager cannot tell you which maps are already installed on your phone!
  3. For Mac
    • There is some, but is buggy (can make your OS to hang or respond slowly) and very limited. Do not recommend.
    • However, if you need it, search and download "Nokia Multimedia Transfer 1.4.2" (v.1.4.3 does not seam to work) and then "Nokia Map Loader"

How to install Skype on Nokia E52 E55

  1. Download:
    • Skype for Symbian - version 1.5.0.12 (provided by Skype™)
    • "Local" copy
  2. To install:
    • Copy the above sisx file to the phone
    • Change phone date to year 2011 (without that, you will get an error about expired/invalid certificate)
    • Start the sisx file using Office->File mgr.
    • Change back phone date to the current year
    • Note that it can take up to 10-15 minutes to login to Skype for the very first time. Subsequent start and login is instantaneous. I do not know why it happens, just be patient.

How to hard reset the phone

There are three ways to reset your Nokia E52 E55 phone. Each way has different effect.

  1. Restore factory settings - type *#7780#
    • Resets all the settings to the default
    • You will NOT lose any data like contacts, calendar etc.
    • It is equivalent to Ctrl.panel -> Settings -> General -> Factory settings
    • It will ask for the phone code, default is 12345
  2. Reformat the phone - type *#7370#
    • Reformats your phone - after that the phone will be like out of the box
    • You will lose all data including contacts, calendar, installed applications, phone code etc.
    • It will ask for the phone code, default is 12345
  3. Hard reset
    • Note - I did NOT try this, use at your own risk!
    • Perform this as a last resort if nothing else is working.
    • Hold the following buttons: * (star key), 3 (number button) and talk/green key. Turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. Once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons.
