36 YEARS OF PAIN WITH BRUNO AND TIMO 

 

Coach Mostert

Coach Timo Mostert has coached the Boys Cross Country Team at American Fork High School since 1998 after being at Murray (Ut.) High School for 10 years. His American Fork boys teams have competed at the State Championships every year he has coached, including 11 State Championships, 6 Runner-up trophies, 22 top 5 finishes, and 14 Region Championships. They have been ranked 17 of the past 19 years in the Southwest United States. His 2009 -2014, '16, and '22 teams all won the NXN Southwest Regionals,   placing 8th, 8th,  6th,  2nd,  7th, 5th, 2nd,  2nd, 7th, 5th, and 2nd at Nike Cross Nationals with 11 All-America honors  and a two-time Individual National Champion. During CoVid-19, his boys placed 1st and 10th at the RunningLane XC Championships with 2 RunningLane All-Americans. His athletes have earned 10 Utah(8 XC, 2 Track) and 2 National Gatorade Runner of the Year awards. At AFHS he has coached 53 XC (Top 10) and 95 Track (Top 8) All-State runners and 30 individual State Champions in Cross-Country and Track. In 2017 his boys set the National Record in the 4X1600m Relay at 16:41.30 (and US #2 Indoor 4Xmile and outdoor 4X1600 times in 2024). In 2020 his boys set the National Record for 5k XC Team Time at 75:04.95. In 2024, Daniel Simmons set the Indoor 5000m Run National record in 13:38.86.

Coach Mostert ran in his first track meet in 6th grade. He lettered 4 years in cross-country, and two years in track in high school and was a school record holder in the 3200m run. He was the first athlete at Parkland College (Champaign, Illinois) to compete in all 4 NJCAA National Championships (Cross-Country, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track, and Marathon) in the same year. After serving a mission to Ecuador for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he ran cross-country and track for Brigham Young University. He has an A.S. in Secondary Education from Parkland College, a B.A. in Mathematics Education with a coaching minor from B.Y.U., and has done Graduate Studies in Mathematics at The University of Utah. He served 10 years on the Youth Committee and 3 years as Track-and-Field Committee Chair for the Utah Association of USA Track and Field,  has served as Vice-President of the Utah High School Track Coaches Association from 2001 to 2019, and has taught at coaches clinics from California to Florida. He is a Masters level Certified Track and Field Official.  He has been nominated twice (2012 and 2014) as "Coach of the Year" for the Utah Governor's State of Sport Awards. Coach Mostert  was recognized as "Teacher of the Year" at American Fork High School in 2006, as the "Utah Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year" in 2010 and 2018 by the NFHS,  and in 6A in 2023 by the UHSTCA,  as the "Distinguished Service Award 5A Coach of the Year" by the UHSAA for 2014-15, as the District 7 (West U.S.) coach of the year in 2018-19 by the NFHS, the NHSCA "National Boys XC Coach of the Year" for 2016-17, the "Joe Newton Boys Coach of the Year" at NXN 2022, and the USTFCCCA "National Boys Cross-Country Coach of the Year" in 2023.

Coach Hunziker

 

Coach Bruno Hunziker has coached  Girls Cross Country and Track at AFHS since 1988.  He has coached two daughters, one of which ran for S.U.U. and his son who was an All-State Runner. His girls team has qualified for the State Championships every year but one since 1993 including 6 State Championships, 10 State Runner-up Trophies, 24 top 5 finishes, and 10 Region Championships. In 1996 the girls C.C. team ranked 9th in the Nation. He has coached 41 XC All-State  runners and an Individual State Champion in Cross Country, the 1600m run and 3200m run , as well as a Footlocker finalist, and an NXN All-American. He was voted the UHSTCA Utah 5A Coach of the Year in 1996, and was honored as the 2014 Utah Girls' Coach of the Year by the USTFCCCA. His Teams have placed 7th (2009), 9th (2012), 5th (2013), 1st (2014, 2015), 4th (2016), 9th (2017) , 1st (2021), and 5th (2022) at the NXN Southwest Regionals. His 2014 Girls placed 22nd and his 2015 Girls placed 6th at Nike Cross Nationals. His 2021 Girls placed 10th at the RunningLane XC Championships

Coach Hunziker started running at Orem High School and was on their State Champion Cross Country team. He also ran a 1:58 in the 880 on the track team. He ran for 4 years in the Marine Corps and has run 18 marathons including: Boston, Washington D.C., San Francisco, etc. etc. He was on the Utah National Guard All Marathon Team for 6 years.  He still runs, but enjoys riding his Harley the most. Coach Hunziker served in the Marines and has recently retired from Alpine School District and the Army National Guard.

 

Coach Dunkley

Coach Lindsey Dunkley started assistant coaching with the AFXC girls' team in 2009. She started running in 9th grade for Springville High School, and ran there until the end of her junior year. At that time,  her family moved to American Fork where Bruno became her running coach and helped her to earn 3 state titles and 5A records in cross-country, the 1600m Run, and the 3200m Run . After high school, Lindsey attended BYU on a full athletic scholarship. At BYU she ran on the 2001 National Championship XC team, and over the years  became an All-American in XC, Indoor, and Outdoor track. Coach Dunkley  now has a husband and 3 kids, but still enjoys running both for fun and competitively: anything from the 5K to the half marathon. Coach Dunkley currently holds the 1/2 marathon records for the Utah Valley (1:13:31) and Hobble Creek (1:10:26) courses.
