1. THANK YOU!

Quite a few people contributed greatly to this experiment. Eelco Ferwerda started all this by suggesting the topic. Dr. Thomas Adelaar challenged and guided me throughout the writing of this paper, together with Roger Pruppers. Saskia de Vries, director/editor in chief of Amsterdam University Press (AUP), enabled me to run this experiment. Hans Scholte delivered more – and better – statistics on the use of the AUP repository than I hoped to get. I benefited greatly from discussions and suggestions by Janneke Adema, Stefan Buddenbohm, Paul Rutten and all members of AUP’s Digital Advisory Board. My colleagues at Amsterdam University Press were helpful in many ways, as were the people from the Digital Production Centre of the Amsterdam University Library. Sanne Sauër kindly checked my English. My family and friends supported me by not minding my absence – again. My daughter Charlotte helped to keep things in perspective by always joking about ‘daddy’s little school’. But most of all I would like to thank my wife Dorien. Without her love and patience I could not have written this paper.
