1964 to the present

Following the placement of the 19th Alberta Dragoons on the Supplementary Order of Battle, the Regiment as it had been known was effectively closed down. While importantly not struck off the order of battle, the reality was that there was no living regiment to continue its traditions and customs. Surprisingly however, the local Edmonton corps of the Royal Canadian Army Cadets maintained their alliance to the Dragoons. Proudly wearing the cap badge of the 19th Alberta Dragoons, #2051 RCACC has continued to remember the traditions and has served to keep the Dragoon name alive in Edmonton.

Despite many bar-room oaths, the Dragoons, as a Reserve Unit were not to be resurrected in the short term. Many other units across Canada faced the axe in 1964 and there existed a fear that if one unit was brought back, then others would have justification to attempt the same feat. For the 19th Alberta Dragoons, a brave and almost successful attempt did take place shortly before 1978. With key Dragoons still active, a move to return an armoured presence to Edmonton was undertaken. In 1978, it was decided that a new squadron of armour would be re-established in Edmonton. With government approval, a small squadron was authorized and many Dragoons were sure that the "Horse" was back in Edmonton. The original seven members of this unit have even indicated that they believed that the new unit was to be the Dragoons and it is reported that their first pay-sheet bore the unit name of the 19th Alberta Dragoons. Alas, after wearing the generic armoured fist for over a year, the small Edmonton unit was made aware that they were to be B Squadron, South Alberta Light Horse. The South Alberta Light Horse, originally from Calgary, were located in Medicine Hat (a mere 7 hour drive away).

In 2004, the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps made it known that the regiments which had been placed on the Supplementary Order of Battle in 1964 were to be officially struck off the order of battle unless a "living" unit wanted to pursue an official amalgamation with any of these units. The South Alberta Light Horse, with its RHQ now in Edmonton, immediately offered to amalgamate with the 19th Alberta Dragoons in order to form a new pan-Alberta armoured regiment. The SALH also adopted historical uniforms which closely mirror those worn by the pre-WW1 Dragoons.

On the 31st of May, 2006 the Honourable Gordon J. O'Connor, PC, MP issued ministerial organization order 2006009. This order officially authorized the amalgamation of the 19th Alberta Dragoons and the South Alberta Light Horse. Thus effective this date, the Dragoon history and lineage is now officially included as a part of the SALH history.

Recently, the South Alberta Light Horse was able to secure a loan of the Dragoon silver collection from the Royal Alberta Museum. The trophies earned by the Regiment are once again proudly displayed in the Officers' Mess along with several other paintings and prints that once hung in the Connaught Armoury Mess!
