Summer Golf Challenge Tournament History

This golf tournament started in 1998 as the Omega Summer Golf Challenge. About three years later, the Omegas of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was joined by the Oak Ridge Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The purpose of the tournament was to support the fraternity and sorority's scholarship programs. The name was then changed to the Summer Golf Challenge. It has historically been held at the Oak Ridge Country Club and always the third Saturday in August. Several years later, the Oak Ridge Country Club Hoofers joined the group. The purpose changed slightly to also provide golf scholarship opportunities to young play who otherwise would not have an opportunity to learn the game.

The tournament has been successful for many years and has always been fun for those who have participated. The tournament has been fortunate to have major sponsors who provided the resources to the tournament that helped to continue to focus on scholarship and learning the game of golf. Hundreds of scholarships have been awarded to very deserving young people around the area.

In 2012, another major focus for the purpose of the tournament was added. This focus was the Oak Ridge Free Medical Clinic. The Oak Ridge Free Medical Clinic provides medical services and supplies to those who do not have access to such services. One half of the proceeds is directed to the Oak Ridge Free Medical Clinic while the other half continues to support the initial purpose of the tournament.
