Batman

While I was in the Navy, I finally got permission to move off base.

The neighborhood I ended up moving to was full of kids.

The first day I pulled up to the house in my previous blue 1980 Corvette,

all the kids came running over. They thought my car was the Batmobile.

One of the kids even asked if I was Batman.

This was the first time I had noticed the reaction of kids to my car.

Later on, almost every time I passed a group of kids,

I usually heard at least one of them screaming, "It's the Batmobile!".

When I got out of the Navy,

I happened to see a really good Batman mask in a Spencer's Gifts shop.

So I decided to finally become Batman for Halloween.

Unfortunately, the weather was bad in Tampa for Halloween of 1997,

so almost no one saw my costume.

The following year, I went back to San Diego to visit my former roommates.

It was very close to Halloween, so I brought my costume.

The very kids who had given me the idea finally got to see me as Batman.

Of course it would have been even better if I had brought my car.

Since I went back to school, I didn't have much time or money.

The knight costume from the previous year had been cheap to make,

but I barely had the time to finish it before Halloween started.

So, the next year I took the easy way out and became Batman

for the third time in five years. I also dressed up the car with a front plate.

The photo is from Halloween 2001:

I am Batman!
