Committee Roles

The Executive Committee

President:

The president is responsible for ensuring that the society runs smoothly. The president organises all internal speaker events, liaises with the Union when necessary, holds meetings, and generally makes sure that everything which needs to get done, gets done.

Vice-President:

The Vice-Presidential role is loosely defined. The VP's main job is to support the president in ensuring the society is run smoothly. This can include running some of the weekly events and helping to fill the society's calendar with speakers. Each president and VP have the opportunity to define the role in the way that best suits them.

Treasurer:

The treasurer submits in the budget applications/reports and makes sure the society is financially on track. The treasurer receives special training from the Union and is responsible for applying for funding, reimbursing society expenses, and submitting the accounts for regular auditing.

Secretary:

The secretary is responsible for sending weekly emails, creating weekly Facebook events, and taking minutes at committee meetings.

The Extended Committee

External Speakers Co-ordinator:

An increasingly demanding role due to the amount of Externals we have coming. Organisation is key as early planning saves LOTS of money. You will be expected to book hotels, trains, cars, planes, pogo sticks. Whatever is necessary to get the speakers here. It's also officially your job to source the speakers, so a good knowledge of contemporary philosophers is a plus.

Publicity Officer:

The publicity officer is responsible for making sure our events are well-publicised. This includes updating our website, making posters, making Facebook events, and occasionally making announcements in lectures.

Conference Convenor:

The Conference Convenor is responsible for organising PhilSoc's annual undergraduate philosophy conference, which is open for participation by philosophy undergrads from all over the globe.

Social Convenor:

The Social Convenor organises and hosts our regular socials, which range from pub quizzes, pub drinking, beach walks, and garden parties.

Journal Editor:

We are proud to run one of the best undergraduate philosophy journals in the world. Aporia editor is responsible for calling for papers, reading and editing submissions, and submitting the journal for publication. The editor is free to form a subcommittee to assist them in the role.

The Diversity and Outreach Officer is responsible for organising panel events and/or reading groups on topics pertaining to diversity in philosophy, advertising and publishing events to encourage a more diverse membership of the society, and being an advocate for the interests of underrepresented groups in committee and society matters.
