Le colloque SPCT vise à explorer le rapport entre le phénomène général des correspondances transmodales et sa concrétisation particulière dans le domaine linguistique sous la forme du symbolisme phonétique.
L'expression correspondances transmodales désigne toute forme d'homologie entre différentes modalités perceptives qu'on peut constater expérimentalement dans la population générale. Par exemple, le fait que l'opposition visuelle entre petitesse et grandeur correspond chez la plupart des sujets à l'opposition auditive entre l'aigu et le grave, et pas le contraire.
L'expression symbolisme phonétique indique le sous-ensemble de correspondances transmodales concernant les sons ou les articulations du langage et leur rapport avec les significations qu'ils véhiculent à l'intérieur d'une langue. Par exemple, le fait que la plupart des langues possédant l'opposition entre diminutif et augmentatif la représentent par le biais d'une opposition entre phonèmes aigus et phonèmes graves, et pas le contraire.

The SSCC conference aims to explore the relationship between the general phenomenon of crossmodal correspondences and its particular realization in the linguistic field in the form of sound symbolism.
The term crossmodal correspondences refers to any kind of homology between different perceptual modalities, which can be observed experimentally in the general population. For instance, the fact that, among the majority of participants, the visual opposition between small and large correlates with the auditory opposition between high pitch and low pitch, and not the contrary.
The term sound symbolism indicates the subset of crossmodal correspondences concerning speech sounds or articulations and their relationship with the meanings they carry within a language. For instance, the fact that most languages having the morphological opposition between diminutive and augmentative represent it by an opposition between high-timbred phonemes and low-timbred phonemes, and not the contrary.
