Class of '69/P&F Scholarship

As part of our 40th Reunion, members of the Class of 1969 presented our 2009 Class Gift to Scripps for the purpose of funding the Class of '69/Peace & Freedom Scholarship, supporting the studies of Rachel Kuenzi '13 (pictured at left) & Natalie Parks '12(at right), introduced below.

Rachel Kuenzi ’13, a first-year student at Scripps from Redmond, Washington, plans to pursue a major in legal studies and a minor in voice. She says, “I chose legal studies as my potential major because I am very interested in the field of law in my future. I thoroughly enjoy studying the politics and philosophy of law and how it is applicable to past and present situations. I hope to focus specifically on the psychological impacts involved in law. I chose to minor in voice because throughout my life, I have been a singer. I have studied several fields of music; my exposure ranges from classical to jazz to musical theatre, and even to opera. I chose to attend Scripps because it offers me an excellent liberal arts education with an opportunity to explore all aspects of  learning before  I narrow down my focus to just a single major. The academic diversity paired with small class sizes and a close knit administration drew me to Scripps. The Claremont consortium also contributed to my decision because it created the experience of belonging to a small community at a big college.” Rachel plans to study abroad in Florence, Italy during her junior year and to study the Italian language before she travels there. As for interests and activities, she has performed in musical theatre and enjoys horseback riding. She also led a project to raise money and awareness about genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan. After graduating from Scripps, she plans to study law in graduate school and pursue a degree in music patent law.

Rachel expresses gratitude for her scholarship: “Had it not been for this scholarship, my educational career at Scripps would not have been possible. I have a deep appreciation for this financial support because it will open up so many doors for my future. Although I am still formulating my future plans, this opportunity at Scripps will provide me with a stepping stone to discover my passion, as well as my career, in life. Thank you so much for this scholarship!”

Natalie Parks ’12, a sophomore from Carmichael, California, plans to pursue a major in economics and a minor in Spanish. She says, “I am interested in becoming an economics major because I am considering a career as a management analyst. I discovered through a job I had last summer, that I have strong organizational and analytical skills that would be useful toward this career. I chose to minor in Spanish with plans to study abroad in Spain during my junior year, to further my knowledge of the language and culture. Scripps has been an amazing experience so far. I love my small classes and getting to know my professors. I am grateful to be able to attend Scripps College.” As for other interests and activities, Natalie works as a receptionist at the Sallie Tiernan Field House.

She adds, “My job allows me to meet and interact with students and has helped me integrate into the Scripps community.” After graduating from Scripps, she plans to intern at a management consulting firm for a couple of years before attending graduate school to obtain a master of business administration degree. Natalie appreciates her scholarship and says, “This scholarship allows me to attend Scripps which is the gateway to my future. It means everything to me.”
