Who is Mrs. De Smith?

Rebecca De Smith is the coordinator and teacher in the Discovery Program at Sioux Center Christian School. She is hired to work full-time with students in grades K-8 to challenge and enrich their learning. She works with students individually and in small groups to broaden and deepen the curriculum in a variety of subject areas, according to students' strengths and interests. She also works with teachers, providing support and strategies for meeting the needs of gifted students within the classroom setting. Mrs. De Smith is in her 42nd year of teaching. She has taught at Sioux Center Christian School for 31 years. She is endorsed by the state of Iowa to teach Talented and Gifted students. She has also earned her Masters' Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, specializing in Reading, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Mrs. De Smith is married to Dr. Bob De Smith (an English professor at Dordt University). They have three children--Rachel (and her husband, Nathan), Bob Jr. (and his wife, Chara), and Sarah. She enjoys reading, gardening, cooking, walking, and spending time with her family. She is an active member of Covenant Christian Reformed Church where she serves on several committees.

Her deepest desire is to serve God in every aspect of her life. With the help of the Holy Spirit, she hopes that her students and colleagues will be able to see the love and joy of serving Jesus in her teaching and in her classroom, as well as within the caring community of Sioux Center Christian School.
