History

SCAN's roots began in September 2004 when Nicholas DeMichael and Angela Mentz conducted the first meeting of SCAN at the Hamden Senior Center in Hamden, Connecticut. Our name Southern Connecticut Ancestry Network was the creation of Nick and fit both our location in Connecticut and our purpose. Our aim was to have network of multi-ethnic members who would get together once a month to discuss our genealogy and to educate each other on the many resources available on-line and the many repositories holding specific records relative to our research.

One year after SCAN's inception, Nicholas DeMichael passed away in April 2005. Though saddened at the loss of Nick, we knew he would want us to continue our family research and grow the SCAN network.

By 2007, members expressed their desire for a membership card that would allow them access to Vital Records. SCAN incorporated as a non-profit genealogical society and, under Connecticut statue, was authorized to issue membership cards which would allow members to perform their vital records research in the vaults throughout the State of Connecticut.

One of SCAN’s past projects was to transcribe the records of all of the graves within the monument sections of Beaverdale Memorial Park (“the Hamden side”) in New Haven, CT. Ten of our members volunteered and information on 10,286 burials was posted on FindAGrave.com.
