THE COMMITTEE

Chairman: Jeremy Khoo

I started playing squash when I was in JC. After winning the SAFRA Novice Open in 1998, I joined SAFRA Squash Club when I was only 17 years old. Being the yougest among many senior players, I was accorded with many privileges, such as free meals and transport.
I left SAFRA for my reservist and played for SAFSA for two years before returning to SAFRA.
My passion for squash continues and this healthy sports make me relax from my highly stressed job. At work, I live to deliver. In squash, I live to win.
I have no regrets with so many great friends I have met within the clubs and many more from other squash clubs who share the same passion for squash.
I am really grateful to have many dedicated and trusted players in the committee, this makes my job as the Club Chairman a bliss!
Now, I am married, I still find time to juggle my life, shuttering with work, wife and squash. And still well balance.. Ha ha.. just for sharing, I maintain my fitness by running with my dogs up the staircases to my unit at 11th floor daily.

I may not look like a squash player but make sure you have a pair of strong feet before challenging me. I used to dominate all the grades as I moved up from the F to the current A grade. Many players suffered sprained ankles from unexpected shots from from my wrist work.
Those were the days, now enjoying fabulous food is my favourite pass time. Many players have benefitted from my feeding. Better than taking any food supplement.
Being also an elected committee member of the Singapore Squash Racket Association, I am always busy with squash matters. And always with God in mind, that's how life should be lived.

I started playing squash in my army days and had not stopped playing since. I am a proud grandad now and have collected my CPF monies. I am really glad that I can still contribute to SAFRA.
You see, squash allows me to remain youthful and still full of oomph despite my age. You will notice that I appear in quite a number of advertisements and I attribute this modelling opportunity to squash.
My only regret is that after all these years, I still rely on my fitness in order to outplay my opponents who are usually half my age, if not 3 times younger than me. SAFRA is truly a friendly and great club for all, young and old, guys and gals....

Chief Coach : Richard Koh. |
My squash days started so long ago that I can only vaguely recall it was sometimes in the early seventies. I have been coaching squash more than twenty years and have the satisfaction of seeing my prodigies playing good squash. Being the Chief Coach of SAFRA, I am saddled with the heavy responsibity of guiding other coaches in developing potential players from scratch. All these are done voluntarily and free of charge. I am a professional coach now conducting squash training for schools, polytechnics and also individual or group basis. If you need a professional coach to guide you along or improve your squash, do e-mail me or call me at 9664-5536.

My first love in sports is soccer and not squash. Though I was ex-national soccer player, it was a fad then in the 80's to tell people that you played squash. With the like of our squash legend, Zainal Abidin counted as one of my buddy, I ventured into playing squash. Of course, Zainal went far while I wine and dine and continue to grow and grow sideways.
These days, I am just a social squash player providing the thrills to the top players in SAFRA. They send all their balls to the back court while my specialty is to surprise them with shots unheard of in squash, "pussy boast" "jumping reverse angle" etc.
Want to learn these strokes? Join us and I will demostrate to you that - squash can be fun.
I mingle well with all the junior players in the club as I am still young at heart, older in all other parts.

I started squash in the polytechnic but was not good to be able to join the first team. I joined SAFRA Squash Club and within months, coaches here transformed me totally and I was then able to beat my compatriots in the poly convincingly.
I am now serving the club by training the new players in the F grades, giving them the basic skills and fitness to become reasonably good players within 2 to 3 months. I am glad to have made a few players who cannot qualify for their school teams to later become the core players of their school teams.

Excerpt from my daughter: Do you know that squash is so-oo cool? Well, people may think it is still a ball game but no! Squash sounds stupid with the ball hits the wall and bounces back. Then, either u or the...er...oh! Or your opponent takes turns to hit the stupid ball. Funny right? I don't really get it though, you know all the hitting to the walls, lets and strokes stuff. Well, as I heard from my dad, he says it's very fun and cool, of course (though I don't even believe). And do you know what, my dad even said (very funny for me)," My love is squash." I then asked,"Why did you marry mummy instead of squash?" He laughed. Well, when you love something or someone you'll marry that whoever or whatever. So as I was curious, I decided to learn squash. Now I know what it means, if you love squash, you'll keep on playing squash so much until it becomes part of your life ( I guess it is something like that ) So, join my dad's club and be a squash lover - you could even win prizes or even trophies and medals. Squash is the coolest ever..............!

A major part of my life has been dedicated to squash. If I am not playing squash in SAFRA Toa Payoh, you will probably find me at the squash courts in Serangoon Garden Country Club.
Besides being a committee member of SAFRA Squash Club, I am also the manager of the SAFRA's Ladies Division Two Team or as some of them called me the MaMa San. My youngest player in the team is only thirteen years old and guest what she is our number one player.
It's never too young or too old to play squash.

I just joined the SAFRA Squash Club a few years ago since stopping competitive squash more than ten years ago. With dedicated coaches, I soon found my touches and stamina and was back to winning ways within 3 months. I am a much fitter person now and the effort really paid off training with all the young school players.
Naturally, I am thankful for the Club for giving me the opportunity to relive my squash life and I am glad they also expose me to the committe work. I am used to volunteerism as I am also a grassroot leader.
