TROLLEY FREIGHT

MOST FREIGHT SERVICE ON THE RHODE ISLAND COMPANY-UNITED ELECTRIC RAILWAY ENDED IN 1929. HOWEVER, STEAM ROAD CAR SWITCHING CONTINUED ON SOUTH WATER STREET IN PROVIDENCE UNTIL 1934 AND ON EDDY, DYER AND DORRANCE UNTIL 1940. BUTTONWOODS LINE SERVICE ENDED IN 1936 EXCEPT FOR THE MILE AT AUBURN WHICH BECAME THE WARWICK RY.

NUMBER 1297 WAS BUILT BY THE RHODE ISLAND CO. IN 1911 AND SOLD TO THE WARWICK RY IN DECEMBER 1949. TWO DUPLICATES WERE BUILT IN 1904 AND 1905. SHOWN AT THE BROAD STREET CAR HOUSE.

NUMBER 1256 WAS A 21 FOOT BOX MOTOR BUILT BY THE UNION RR IN 1901.

SHOWN ON CRAWFORD STREET NEAR MARKET SQUARE, PROVIDENCE WHEN NEW.

NUMBER 1260 WAS BUILT BY NEWBURYPORT IN 1901.

THE NEW 32-FOOT BOX MOTOR IS ON CRAWFORD STREET NEAR MARKET SQUARE, PROVIDENCE.

Box Motor 1258 was built by Newburyport in 1901. It was photographed at Apponaug.

NUMBER 1277 WAS A 32-FOOT BOX MOTOR BUILT BY THE RHODE ISLAND CO. IN 1912.

NUMBER 1249 WAS BUILT BY AMERICAN CAR & FOUNDRY.

EIGHT OF THE 32-FOOT COAL CARS WERE BUILT IN 1904 AND 14 IN 1908.

The Rhode Island Co. locomotive is hauling coal cars on the Seaview Railroad possibly in the vicinity of East Greenwich where the Seaview interchanged with the Rhode Island Co.

RICO built three of these "motors" in 1904, 1905, and 1911 numbered 1295-1297.

SPRINKLER NUMBER 405 WAS BUILT BY BRILL IN 1902.

SHOWN BEING DEMONSTRATED AT THE CAR BARN WHEN NEW.

RUSSELL SWEEPER NUMBER 103 IS AT THE NORTH MAIN STREET CAR BARN IN OCTOBER 1938.

THE SWEEPER IS ON DORRANCE STREET APPROACHING WESTMINSTER STREET. THE VIEW IS FROM NEAR CITY HALL. NOTE THE TRACKLESS TROLLEY WHICH REPLACED THE RAIL CARS IN THE LATE 1940s.

NUMBER 9 WAS ONE OF 25 SINGLE TRUCK PLOWS BUILT BY WASON 1902-05.

ROTARY PLOW BUILT FOR THE UNION RAILROAD IN 1899 BY THE PECKHAM MOTOR TRUCK & WHEEL CO. OF KINGSTON, N.Y. THE PLOW WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE IN FEBRUARY 1901 AND NOT REPLACED. REPORTEDLY THE FIRST ROTARY PLOW IN NEW ENGLAND.

THE MOTORMAN FAILED TO WAIT FOR AN OPPOSING CAR.

SIX PEOPLE WERE KILLED, INCLUDING THE MOTORMAN. TWENTY PEOPLE WERE INJURED.

CAR 655 WAS A RIVERPOINT LINE CAR PRESSED INTO SERVICE- TRAINS WERE OPERATING EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES AND THE BUTTONWOODS LINE WAS CONGESTED. THE MOTORMAN HAD MADE SEVERAL TRIPS THAT DAY BUT UNEXPLICABLY DID NOT WAIT AT A SIDING AS INSTRUCTED. CAR 655 WAS BUILT BY NEWBURYPORT IN 1898 , THE FIRST ON THE SYSTEM WITH VESTIBULES. IT WAS REBUILT WITH A DIFFERENT NUMBER
