University and Research Institute Programs

Akron, University of -

Columbia University - The primary aim of the Program is to provide New York metropolitan area middle and high school science teachers with sustained hands-on experience in scientific research so they can better understand the practice of science, and better transmit to their students and fellow teachers a feeling for its practice.

Department of Energy - DOE Academies Creating Teacher Scientists (ACTS) program is designed by the Office of Science to create a cadre of outstanding science and math teachers with the proper content knowledge and scientific research experience to serve as leaders and agents of positive change in their local and regional teaching communities.

Drexel University - Provides experiential engineering education to K-12 teachers in the Delaware Valley region through laboratory discovery. Create innovative dissemination of gained knowledge to student and colleagues

Florida State University - The Science Inquiry for Teachers program is a six-week residential program. This is an ideal opportunity for teachers who want to develop their knowledge of science inquiry as well as how to better teach science through inquiry. This is accomplished through hands on scientific research of each individual teacher’s own devising.

Florida State University (as part of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory RET) - The RET program gives K-12 teachers from across the country the chance to participate in real-world science and cutting-edge magnetic field research. Through weekly seminars, discussion groups, professional development and technology workshops, teachers develop strategies and resources to translate the experience into material for their classrooms.

Harvard University - Teachers in 3 National Science Foundation-funded programs will work closely with faculty, staff, students, and each other to develop educational modules based on their exposure to research throughout the summer. While all teacher participants share common meeting and training activities, each funding source has a distinct focus.

LIGO Livingston Observatory - The RET program is an six week paid summer internship for teachers (K – 12) that is designed to offer selected teachers the opportunity to experience working in a science research environment on topics of mutual interest with LIGO. Goals for the internship include professional development and broadening real-world science experience.

MIT - MIT's Center for Materials Science and Engineering offers middle and high school science teachers an exciting opportunity to participate in cutting-edge materials research at MIT and design classroom material based on that research.

National Radio Astronomy Observatory - The NRAO program offers summer research positions at the NRAO in Socorro, NM and in Green Bank, WV. The program provides teachers with 8-week summer internships working with individual astronomers or other NRAO staff on their research. RET participants will be involved in one of several astronomy research projects

Northeastern University - Middle school high school teachers, as well as community college faculty spend six weeks in the RET summer program. Participants are placed in research assignments in pairs. Laboratory assignments may be at Northeastern University, Boston University, and/or UMass Lowell through partnering research centers and faculty.

Northwestern University (Nanoscale and Engineering) - This Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program is a unique professional development opportunity for science teachers funded by the National Science Foundation and offered by the Nanoscale Science & Engineering Center (NSEC) at Northwestern University.

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology - This program will provide ten sixth through twelfth grade teachers the opportunity to work side-by-side with undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty mentors in the exciting enterprise of research in areas such as materials science and engineering, biology, and environmental science.

South Florida, University of - This experience provides teachers with enhanced teaching skills/methods, the ability to motivate students in science and math disciplines, and a higher level of credibility and knowledge to apply when advising/guiding students toward the engineering disciplines

Standford University IISME - This RET program offers eight-week research fellowships to 25 teachers of middle school, high school and community college in the San Francisco Bay Area each summer. It is funded by NSF, NIH, NASA, US Department of Energy and private foundations.

Texas Southwestern, University of - Through participation in the Summer Research Program, teachers not only learn new techniques, but also rekindle their interest in science, which positively impacts their students. In addition, teachers use their newfound knowledge and skills to develop classroom activities that relate to their areas of research.

Vanderbilt University - High School science teachers will become active participants in curriculum design and biomedical engineering research. The participants will be given a three day overview of the program and overviews of engineering as a whole, biomedical engineering in particular, and what it means to do both biomedical engineering and educational research.
