COMO

James Duffield Harding’s original nineteenth century lithograph, Como from the Milan Road was created for a series of lithographic landscapes entitled, Sketches at Home and Abroad. This impression is printed upon thick wove paper and with large, full margins as published in London in 1836. It is titled, dated and initialed in the stone to the lower right, Como from the Milan Road, Sept. 1834, J D H. In the forefront of this 19th century Italian landscape the British artist, James Harding depicts a quiet scene on a hilltop overlooking a panoramic view of the city of Como in Lombardy, Italy. In the central background of this large view, one can see the dome of Como Cathedral (Duomo di Como). During this time, Harding also created other views of Lombardy towns and cities, such as Bergamo and Bellano. Situated at the south-western end of Lake Como (Lago di Como), the city of Como borders Switzerland and is about twenty-five miles to the north of Milan. Altogether, this is a splendid, original example of the lithographic art created by one of England’s finest topographical artists, J. D. Harding.
