Pedro Javier Herrera holds a BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Computer Science from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) in Spain. He has been involved in teaching activities and research at UCM, the Centre for Automation and Robotics (CAR, joint centre for shared ownership between the CSIC and UPM), and the Francisco de Vitoria University (UFV), and collaborations with the International University of La Rioja (UNIR). He has conducted research stays at the National Institute of Agricultural and Food Research and Technology (INIA), and the Freie Universität Berlin (FU-Berlin). He is currently an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the National Distance Education University (UNED). 

He has worked with various organizations and research centers (CAR-CSIC, ICA-CSIC, IAS-CSIC, CIFOR-INIA, FTW, IRSTEA), universities (UCM, UPM, UNED, UC3M, URJC, UAH, FU-Berlin, IPN, UdeG, UP, UF) and companies (Enagás, Dimap, Agrosap, CNH, AirRobot, Cyberbotics, Bluebotics, CogVis, CM, Tropical), through international and national projects, and contracts with companies. As a result, numerous publications in journals, books and conference proceedings.

His main research activities are in the fields of Computer Vision, Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning and Cognitive Robotics. Coauthor of the book "Deep Learning" ("Aprendizaje Profundo", spanish edition), ​​published in 2021 by RC Libros, his current line of research includes the study and development of deep learning models and its application to computer vision problems, natural language processing and time series forecasting. His interests are also directed towards continuous training and teaching innovation.

He is a member from the Spanish Society on Automation and Control (CEA-IFAC).
