PHYTOCHEMISTRY GROUP

The Phytochemistry Group focuses its research activity on the identification, stereostructural characterization and quantitative evaluation of bioactive natural products from natural sources. We devote particular attention to the plants known in traditional medicine and to those commonly used as food plants. The metabolites are selected according to their bio-pharmacological interest, considering the possibility to use them as lead compounds for the development of new drugs or as tools to investigate innovative biochemical aspects. In some cases, semi-synthetic modifications or total synthesis shall be made. The evaluation of the bio-pharmaceutical activities is achieved through a wide range of national and international collaborations, e.g. Prof. Di Pietro (Univ. Lyon, France); Prof. Munoz (Univ. Cordoba, Spain); Prof. Khan (Univ. Mississippi, USA); Prof. Tasdemir (GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany); Prof. Muller (Univ. of Mainz, Germany); Prof. Guo (Shanghai, China).

Phytochemistry Group is responsible for the Post-Graduate Course in "Officinal Plants and Phytotherapeutic Products ", at the Department of Pharmacy.

Phytochemistry Group is also responsible for the University of Naples Federico II of the Convention with the "Universitas Sam Ratulangi" in Manado (Indonesia) and the "Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica" (China).
