Walks With Storms - SOLD

Acrylic on canvas

24" X 30"

This is an ORIGINAL painting in acrylic on canvas of a Pawnee warrior in buffalo robe.

The Pawnee Indians were originally located in what is now Nebraska and Kansas. During the 1800s, the Pawnee tribe was forced to move to a reservation in Oklahoma, and most Pawnee people are still living in Oklahoma today. Although Pawnee chiefs were always men, the position of chief was passed on to a sister's children rather than their own.

When I painted Walks With Storms in 2009 I had a friend (a member of the Pawnee tribe) pose for it. I used, as a reference, a photograph from the 1850s of a Pawnee warrior in this buffalo robe and asked my friend to see if he could offer the same expression as the man in the photograph. He was a natural! He agreed that I captured the expression of a true warrior, as well as the feel of buffalo hide and what may have been a fox fur hat in the original photo. I offer this work to you with the hope that you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed capturing it on canvas.

Nahwah (Pawnee for "welcome")
