Parliamentary Society of Toronto (PST)

Welcome to the PST!

Established in 1986, the Parliamentary Society of Toronto is a proud affiliate (Chapter 51) of the American Institute of Parliamentarians. We meet monthly from September through May to discuss, practise and educate ourselves about parliamentary procedure and rules of order for meetings.

New members and guests are always welcome!

When & Where Do We Meet?

Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month from September through May, usually in a committee room in one of the Toronto municipal buildings (Metro Hall, City Hall or North York Civic Centre). Meetings are about two hours long, starting at 5:45 pm. During the pandemic, we have been holding virtual meetings using the Zoom platform.

What Do We Do In Meetings?

We get together to learn and share good parliamentary practices and how to organize and participate in an efficient and effective meeting. Each PST meeting provides an opportunity for volunteers to chair the meeting; test our knowledge with a parliamentary quiz; present a researched topic; and lead a mock presiding practice session.

The agenda also includes an opportunity for members to raise procedural problems or questions encountered in their work or in other organizations in which they participate.

The May meeting is typically our end-of-year dinner. It is more of a social event, but sometimes features guest speakers or other learning opportunities

Guests Are Always Welcome!

Guests are always welcome to attend one or more meetings to 'try us out' before deciding to join! If you would like to attend a meeting, or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Secretary at parliamentary.society.of.toronto@gmail.com.
