2016-11-18. Pro-Zionist Jewish Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen (1934-2016) was a racist Zionist collaborator who shamefully ignored Apartheid Israel's Palestinian Genocide

Pro-Zionist Canadian singer and songwriter Leonard Cohen died on 7 November 2016. Leonard Cohen’s death has prompted world-wide mourning from his numerous fans, but missing from the Mainstream media coverage outside Apartheid Israel is his shameful role, together with many other performers, as a Zionist collaborator through repeated concert tours of nuclear terrorist, racist Zionist-run, genocidally racist, democracy-by-genocide Apartheid Israel and his lying by omission over Apartheid Israel’s ongoing Palestinian Genocide.

Leonard Cohen (1934 –2016), the much-honoured and iconic Jewish Canadian singer, songwriter, poet and novelist, died at the age of 82. His work explored religion, politics, isolation, personal relationships and sexuality, and generated a huge following around the world [1]. Leonard Cohen’s songs are beautifully sad, wistful, dark, lyrical and bordering on transcendental truth, like lost or unrealized love. Richard Gehr writing in RollingStone has summarized Cohen’s musical life thus: “Cohen was the dark eminence among a small pantheon of extremely influential singer-songwriters to emerge in the Sixties and early Seventies. Only Bob Dylan exerted a more profound influence upon his generation, and perhaps only Paul Simon and fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell equalled him as a song poet. Cohen's haunting bass voice, nylon-stringed guitar patterns and Greek-chorus backing vocals shaped evocative songs that dealt with love and hate, sex and spirituality, war and peace, ecstasy and depression. He was also the rare artist of his generation to enjoy artistic success into his Eighties, releasing his final album, You Want It Darker, earlier this year” [2].

However, despite Leonard Cohen’s earnest search for enlightenment and truth, he managed to not only ignore the Elephant in the Room reality of Apartheid Israel’s ongoing Palestinian Genocide but also to act as an active Zionist collaborator helping to legitimize a genocidally racist, Apartheid rogue state. Of course Leonard Cohen was not alone in this shameful Zionist collaboration and white-washing of a genocidal Apartheid state – governments and Mainstream media have a similar commitment to Apartheid Israel throughout the Neocon American and Zionist Imperialist (NAZI)-perverted and subverted West.

In 2009, despite protests from human rights groups, iconic Jewish Canadian singer Leonard Cohen performed at a sell-out concert at the 50,000-seat Ramat Gan stadium near Tel Aviv as part of this 2008-2009 world tour. Leonard Cohen was due to sing in Ramallah at the 736-seat Ramallah Cultural Palace by way of “balance” , but this was scrapped because of Palestinian objections to Leonard Cohen’s implicit collaboration with Apartheid Israel. The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) stated: "Ramallah will not receive Cohen as long as he is intent on whitewashing Israel's colonial apartheid by performing in Israel" [3]. This was Leonard Cohen's first performance in Apartheid Israel since 1980 and it was announced that the huge proceeds would go to a fund in partnership with Amnesty International to be used by Israeli and Palestinian peace groups, but Amnesty International withdrew from any involvement [1, 4].

Thus Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) press release (New York, NY, August 18, 2009): “Amnesty International has announced today that it will abstain from any involvement in the Leonard Cohen concert in Tel Aviv and will not be party to any fund that benefits from the concert’s proceeds. A number of media accounts had reported that Amnesty International was to manage or otherwise partner in a fund created from the proceeds of Cohen’s concert in Israel that would be used to benefit Israeli and Palestinian groups. Amnesty International’s announcement today followed an international outcry over the human rights organization’s reported involvement in the Leonard Cohen concert fund, and an earlier international call for Cohen to boycott apartheid Israel. Omar Barghouti from the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) commented, “We welcome Amnesty International’s withdrawal from this ill-conceived project which is clearly intended to whitewash Israel’s violations of international law and human rights. By abandoning the Leonard Cohen project in Tel Aviv, Amnesty International has dealt Cohen and his public relations team a severe blow, denying them the cover of the organization’s prestige and respectability…” [4]. In 1973 Jewish Zionist Leonard Cohen dropped everything and came to Apartheid Israel to sing to genocidal and war criminal Israel Defence Force (IDF) troops defending territory they had illegally occupied in the war criminal 1967 war. Serial war criminal, human rights abuser, anti-Arab anti-Semite, mass murderer and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu eulogized Leonard Cohen on the occasion of Cohen’s passing (11 November 2016): “Leonard Cohen was a great creator, a talented artist, and a warm Jew, who loved the people of Israel and the state of Israel. I will not forget how he came to Israel during the Yom Kippur War in order to sing to IDF soldiers, out of a deep feeling of partnership. His touching voice will continue to accompany us, like his prayer ‘Hallelujah.’ May his memory be a blessing” [6]. The similarly genocide- and mass murder-complicit Israeli President, Reuven Rivlin, also sang the praises of Zionist collaborator Leonard Cohen as “A giant of a creator, open to all people, who also knew how to accompany the State of Israel in the fields of battle and in times of growth”[6].

That wonderful Palestinian humanitarian Jesus Christ tells the parable of the Good Samaritan who did not “pass by on the other side”, helped a badly beaten and robbed Jew “And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him” [7] . In contrast, a “priest” and a “Levite” both saw the injured Jew but each “passed by on the other side” [7]. In relation to the sorely oppressed, egregiously robbed and substantially ethnically cleansed Indigenous Palestinians, in 1973, 1980 and 2009 Leonard Cohen very publicly “passed by on the other side” three (3) times in singing to Jewish Israelis in genocidally racist Apartheid Israel.

Again that wonderful Palestinian humanitarian Jesus Christ predicted at the Last Supper that Peter would betray him three times: “Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice… Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly” [8]. By repeatedly singing to genocidally racist Apartheid Israel, Leonard Cohen has betrayed Humanity thrice.

Richard Lightbown stated “to the dead we owe the truth” in commenting on the Leonard Cohen legacy of failure to face the reality of the racist Zionists’ Palestinian Genocide (11 November 2016): “Like vintage wine gone sour, Leonard Cohen’s beautiful love songs became tainted by his contribution to the normalization of Israel’s criminal policies. The man who saw himself as a soldier on stage just didn’t have it in himself to face the realities of everyday Palestinian existence. For a writer who had criticised social injustice this was a coward’s response to a gross injustice”, a failure that outstanding Australian pro-Palestinian human rights activist Dr Vacy Vlazna described as: “The emptiness between words and actions” (see [9]).

And the dead are many and the other injustices are many. 2 million Indigenous Palestinians have been killed since the mid-1930s by violence (0.1 million) or Zionist-imposed deprivation (1.9 million). Of over 12 million Palestinians (half of them children) , over 6 million are forbidden to even step foot in their own country under pain of death, and of 6.4 million Indigenous Palestinian subjects of Apartheid Israel, 4.7 million are held hostage without human rights, charge or trial in the blockaded Gaza Concentration Camp (2 million) or in West Bank ghettoes (2.7 million) under IDF guns, with 1.7 million Palestinian Israelis living as Third Class citizens in a racist Apartheid state with Nazi-style race laws. Of the now majority population in Palestine of 6.4 million Israeli Palestinian subjects, 73% are excluded from voting for the government ruling them – Apartheid indeed [10, 11].

Leonard Cohen’s most famous song was “Hallelujah” (“praise God”) that says that “praise God” can come from “the holy or the broken”, referencing both David and Samson, morally flawed and genocidally violent Hebrew heroes in circa 1000 BC against the Philistines (from whom Palestine draws it ancient name):

“Now I've heard there was a secret chord

That David played, and it pleased the Lord

But you don't really care for music, do you?

It goes like this

The fourth, the fifth

The minor fall, the major lift

The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof

You saw her bathing on the roof

The first verse of the song references the genocidally racist proto-Zionist and proto-Nazi King David whose Star of David adorns the blood-soaked flag of Apartheid Israel. David was a genocidally racist mass murderer who completely exterminated the inhabitants of Canaanite towns, of which the Jebusite city Jerusalem was the largest to be completely ethnically cleansed by this proto-Nazi psychopath of 3,000 years ago. However David had a saving grace of being a musician who could find “the sacred chord” of sublime beauty.

The second verse of “Hallelujah”, references Samson whose powers vanish when the Philistine Delilah cuts his hair, and David’s lust for Bathsheba the wife of Uriah the Hittite, a soldier who David arranges to be killed in battle. But musical genius transcends human weakness and sex: “And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah”.

The third verse praises the universality of truth from whatever flawed source: “There's a blaze of light/ In every word/ It doesn't matter which you heard/ The holy or the broken Hallelujah”.

The fourth verse is a personal confession of a flawed life cleansed by the truth and Hallelujah (“praise God” for a monotheist, “praise Goodness” for a secular Humanist, “praise Beauty” for an artist or poet, or “praise Truth” (or the best approximation to the Truth) for a scientist. Indeed John Keats concludes in an Ode on A Grecian Urn”: “'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all/ Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know” [14].

In “Hallelujah”, Leonard Cohen adverts only to the sexual proclivities or sexual weaknesses of Samson and David [13]. However Jewish convert, self-asserted “nice”, pro-human rights but anti-BDS Zionist, Geraldine Brooks, pulls almost no punches in describing the appalling crimes of David in her factional novel “The Sacred Chord”, the title of which derived from Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” [15, 16]. Thus, for example, David cold-bloodedly kills the father and uncle of shepherd boy Natan [Nathan in the Bible ] . Natan survives by having a fit in which he talks like a God-inspired prophet to the killer, who is so impressed that he takes Natan on as a prophet just as Shmuel [Samuel] was the prophet of Shaul [Saul], the Israelite king eventually deposed by the Lord for not completely killing all of his conquered Canaanites and their livestock. Insurgent David under threat from King Saul becomes a mercenary ally of the Plishtim [Philistines, and hence the term Palestine] and after attacking and destroying Canaanite towns pretends to the Plishtim that he has been attacking Israelite towns – however to prevent the secret emerging, David orders that the Canaanite populations be totally exterminated (one notes that an appropriate anagram today for ISRAEL is e-LIARS). David successfully impregnates Batsheva [Bathsheba], wife of Uriah the Hittite, and then arranges for Uriah to die in battle (the child of this lust dies associated with Divine curse but a second child grows up to eventually be King Solomon). As part of a political deal, David betrays 5 grandsons of Saul via Merav to the Givonites who hunt them down and kill them. David unwisely protects his son who has raped his own sister. David’s further son Absalom kills the rapist, is persuaded to rebel against David and is killed, leaving a despairing David to utter the utterly tragic words: “ O my son Absolom, my son, my son Absolom! Would God I had died for thee, O Absolom, my son, my son!” [17] . However Geraldine Brooks falsely sanitizes the Bible in having a victorious David allowing the defeated Jebusites to leave Jerusalem in peace, whereas to John Wesley the Bible actually implies that they were exterminated and any surviving Jebusites forbidden to return [16].

Leonard Cohen’s songs are beautifully sad, wistful, and dark and skirt some kinds of transcendental truth. However, Leonard Cohen’s line “I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you” in “Hallelujah”, turns on its head his role as a de facto apologist for racist Zionism and Apartheid Israel’s ongoing Palestinian Genocide through his repeated concert tours of Apartheid Israel. His lie in “Hallelujah” is a lie of omission. In “Hallelujah” the weakness or crime of both David and Samson is merely sexual surrender to a woman who is not Jewish (a shikse in Yiddish) and hardly a crime today for 99.9% of Humanity. The lie in “Hallelujah” is an immense lie of omission about the Israelite Palestinian Genocide of 1,000 BC just as the lie of omission of Leonard Cohen’s pro-Zionism and Zionist collaboration is the US-, UK-, EU-, Canada- and Australia-backed Zionist Palestinian Genocide of the last century that is still continuing while the Western world looks the other way. 2 million Palestinians, one quarter of them women, half of them children, three quarters of them women and children have died from Zionist violence (0.1 million) or from Zionist- imposed deprivation (1.9 million) since the mid-1930s whereas 4,000 Zionist colonizers have been killed since 1920 [10, 11].

Of course Leonard Cohen is not alone in his crimes of being a Zionist collaborator and of resolutely not acknowledging the ongoing the Palestinian Genocide. Numerous other performers have also travelled to Apartheid Israel and thus lent legitimacy to this neo-Nazi Apartheid rogue state. Thus, for example, Jewish Zionist Bob Dylan, Elton John, Justin Bieber, and Madonna have also performed in Apartheid Israel [18].

Lying by omission is deadly as revealed by the shocking dimensions of the ongoing Palestinian Genocide and the other appalling human rights abuses by by genocidally racist Zionists and US-, UK-, France-, Canada- and Australia-backed Apartheid Israel can be summed up by the following appalling key statistics:

(1) Since 1936 there have been 2 million Palestinian deaths from Zionist violence (0.1 million) or Zionist-imposed deprivation (1.9 million );

(2) There are 7 million Palestinian refugees and all of the over 12 million Palestinians are excluded from all or part of Palestine;

(3) Of over 12 million Palestinians (half of them children), 6 million are forbidden to even step foot in their own country, 4.7 million are held hostage with zero human rights under Israeli guns in the Gaza Concentration Camp (2.0 million) or in ever-dwindling West Bank Bantustan ghettoes (2.7 million), and 1.7 million live as Third Class citizens as Israeli Palestinians under Nazi-style Apartheid Israeli race laws;

(4) 90% of Palestine has now been ethnically cleansed of Indigenous Palestinian inhabitants;

(5) GDP per capita is US$2,900 for Occupied Palestinians as compared to US$37,700 for Apartheid Israel;

(6) Through imposed deprivation, each year Apartheid Israel passively murders about 2,700 under-5 year old Palestinian infants and passively murders 4,200 Occupied Palestinians in general;

(7) Apartheid Israel violently kills an average of about 500 Occupied Palestinians each year;

(8) Occupied Palestinians are deprived of essentially all human rights by Apartheid Israel ;

(9) Nuclear terrorist, serial war criminal, genocidally racist, democracy-by-genocide, racist Zionist-run Apartheid Israel determines that the 37% of its subjects who are Occupied Palestinians cannot vote for the government ruling them;

(10) US-backed Apartheid Israel in its genocidal treatment of the Palestinians ignores numerous UN General Assembly Resolutions and UN Security Council Resolutions, the UN Genocide Convention, the Geneva Convention, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Rights of the Child Convention, the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and many other aspects of International Law;

(11) Apartheid Israel has attacked 12 countries and occupied 5 with 1950-2005 avoidable deaths from deprivation in countries neighbouring Apartheid Israel totalling 24 million;

(12) Apartheid Israel and its traitorous and genocidally racist Zionist agents have subverted and perverted Western democracy, media and institutions with appalling mortality consequences:

(a) 17 million avoidable deaths from deprivation globally each year and 1,500 million such deaths since 1950 (this including 600 million Muslims), this carnage being linked to Zionist perversion of US aid and foreign policy [19];

(b) 32 million Muslim deaths from violence (5 million) or imposed deprivation (27 million) in 20 countries subject to US Alliance invasion since the US Government’s 9-11 false flag atrocity that may also have involved Apartheid Israel and Saudi Arabia and which precipitated the US War on Terror (aka the US War on Muslims) [20- 25].

(c) millions of Indigenous deaths from violence or imposed deprivation in countries subject to Apartheid Israeli-backed, genocidal civil wars, notably Guatemala, Sri Lanka, Syria and South Sudan.

(d) 23 million American preventable deaths since 9-11 (1.7 million annually) inescapably linked to Zionist-beholden US Governments committing to a $7 trillion long-term accrual cost of the killing of millions of Muslims abroad in the War on Terror instead of keeping millions of Americans alive at home. Pro-Zionist, US lackey Australia has similarly committed to $11 billion per year long-term to the War on Terror ($165 billion since 9-11) with this fiscal perversion linked to 1.2 million preventable deaths since 9-11. Canada has similarly committed hugely to the War on Terror with this linked to 0.1 million Canadian preventable deaths annually or 1.5 million preventable deaths in Canada since 9-11. Similarly, 150,000 UK residents die preventably each year. The annual probability of a UK resident dying from a preventable cause (e.g. smoking, drinking, obesity, adverse hospital events, violence etc) is 1 in 417, this being 38,000 times higher than the annual probability of being killed by a terrorist of 1 in 15.8 million [26-30].

And of course this horrendous Zionist-linked carnage was resolutely ignored by self-asserted “seeker after truth” but Zionist collaborator, Apartheid Israel white-washer and ignorer of the Palestinian Genocide, Leonard Cohen. Genocide ignoring and holocaust ignoring are far, far worse than repugnant genocide denial and holocaust denial because the latter at least permit rebuttal and public discussion.

For anti-racist Jews and indeed all anti-racist humanitarians the core moral messages from the WW2 Jewish Holocaust (5-6 million dead, 1 in 6 dying from deprivation) and from the more general WW2 European Holocaust (30 million Slav, Jewish and Gypsy dead) are “zero tolerance for racism”, “never again to anyone”, “bear witness” and “zero tolerance for lying”. While Jewish Canadian Leonard Cohen “passed by on the other side”, his fellow Canadian, acclaimed anti-racist Jewish writer Naomi Klein, has observed these sacred injunctions and has unequivocally stated: “There is a debate among Jews - I'm a Jew by the way. The debate boils down to the question: "Never again to everyone, or never again to us?... [Some Jews] even think we get one get-away-with-genocide-free card...There is another strain in the Jewish tradition that say[s], “Never again to anyone.”” [31].

Indeed numerous anti-racist Jewish and non-Jewish intellectuals, writers, leaders and artists around the world have variously spoken out against the genocidal crimes of Apartheid Israel and the need for Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against this genocidally racist Apartheid rogue state and its supporters [32- 36]. Thus, for example, outstanding anti-racist Jewish American scholar Professor Jared Diamond in his best-selling book "Collapse” (Prologue, p10, Penguin edition) enunciated the "moral principle, namely that it is morally wrong for one people to dispossess, subjugate, or exterminate another people" – an injunction grossly violated by racist Zionist (RZ)-run Apartheid Israel and its racist, genocide-committing and genocide-ignoring US Alliance backers [34].

Conclusions.

It is now too late for the late Leonard Cohen to “bear witness” to the horrendous and genocidal crimes of the racist Zionists (RZs). Decent anti-racist people around the word must (a) inform everyone they can, (b) urge and apply Boycotts. Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Apartheid Israel and all the people, politicians, parties, countries, companies and corporations complicit in the racist Zionist Palestinian Genocide by nuclear terrorist, genocidally racist, democracy-by-genocide, racist Zionist-run, neo-Nazi Apartheid Israel (just as BDS was successfully applied against US-, UK-, Australia- and Apartheid Israel-backed Apartheid South Africa), and (c) declare that Zionism is genocidal racism and the racist Zionists and their supporters must be sidelined from public life as have been Nazis, neo-Nazis, Apartheiders and the Ku Klux Klan (KKK).
